There’s something special about time at the dam for our elephants.

It’s where they cool down, swim, relax, socialise and simply enjoy being elephants. But it’s also where our team gets to spend some quiet, quality time with the herd away from the busier parts of the day.

These calm moments in the water become even more important this time of year, because Bushveld winter is settling in and the water is starting to get properly chilly. Soon the elephants will spend less time swimming and more time soaking up the winter sun instead. 🐘💦

That’s why moments like this feel extra special — peaceful afternoons at the dam before winter fully takes over.

Did you know elephant poo was traditionally used as a remedy for nosebleeds and even as a mild painkiller? 🐘💩

And when you think about it, it actually starts making sense. Elephants spend all day eating an incredible variety of plants, herbs, bark, roots and fruit from across the Bushveld.

But it gets even crazier.
People make paper from elephant dung.
It can work as a natural mosquito repellent.
You can make firelighters from it.
There’s even luxury coffee and craft beer connected to elephant dung.

Meanwhile most of us see it lying in the road and just walk around it.
Elephants really are walking ecosystems. 🌿

A walk with elephants is about so much more than just walking with them. 🌿🐘

As you explore the bush with our guides and grooms, guests learn about the different trees in the veld — and which ones the Ellies love most. Watching them browse their favourite branches is always fascinating.

Because our elephants share 300 hectares of bushveld with us, we take great care of the environment. Our grooms make sure the elephants don’t pull down the last standing tall trees, and they are also supplemented with lucerne, oat bales, and branches sourced from local farms to protect the veld.

It’s all part of the balance between education, conservation, and unforgettable experiences.
