Built for speed, right down to their toes. 🐆💨

A cheetah’s paws may look like those of any other cat, but they are specially adapted for high-speed hunting.

Unlike most cats, cheetahs have semi-retractable claws. They cannot fully pull their claws back into protective sheaths, meaning they remain partly exposed even when the cheetah is resting. This gives them extra grip on the ground - almost like natural running spikes.

Their paw pads are another important adaptation. They are hard and ridged, providing traction and helping the cheetah maintain grip while accelerating, turning and changing direction at high speed.

Together, the claws and paws act almost like a built-in pair of running shoes. 🐾

Every detail matters when your hunting strategy depends on reaching incredible speeds in just a few seconds. 🤍

That “smile” is actually a pretty impressive piece of hunting equipment. 🐱🦷

When a serval yawns, we get a rare little look inside its mouth - and a glimpse of the adaptations that make it such an effective predator.

Servals have sharp, pointed canine teeth for gripping prey, while their smaller incisors and specialised back teeth help them tear and process their food. Their teeth are perfectly suited to a carnivorous diet.

And then there’s that tongue! Like other cats, a serval’s tongue is covered in tiny, backward-facing structures called papillae. These rough, hook-like structures help cats scrape meat from bones and also play an important role in grooming.

So while this may look like the cutest little smile, there’s actually a lot going on inside that mouth. 🐾

Sometimes a yawn gives us the perfect opportunity to appreciate just how wonderfully adapted these cats are. 🤍

Sometimes, the fastest animal on land just wants a little attention. 🐆🤍

Cheetahs may be known around the world for their incredible speed, but moments like these remind us that there is so much more to them.

Behind those famous spots and powerful legs are unique personalities, curious characters and animals with their own little ways of showing what they want. 🐾

And sometimes… that simply means walking straight towards the camera with one very clear mission. 🥹🤍

Made to disappear in the grass. 🐾🌾

With their golden coat covered in bold black spots and stripes, servals are certainly beautiful - but their markings serve an important purpose too.

In the tall grasses and vegetation of their natural habitat, their distinctive coat helps break up the outline of their body, making them much harder to spot. Their colours and patterns blend surprisingly well into the changing light and shadows around them.

And while we might see a beautifully patterned cat, potential prey may have a much harder time noticing a serval quietly moving through the grass. 👀🌿

Add their long legs, large ears and incredible ability to locate even the smallest movements and you have a predator perfectly adapted to its environment.

Beautiful to us. Hidden from them. 🤍🐾

Did you know that cheetahs are one of the few big cats that can purr?

Unlike lions and tigers, cheetahs can purr continuously while breathing both in and out. And honestly… there might not be a much more adorable sound in the world. 🥹

Purring is often associated with contentment and comfort and hearing it up close is something truly special.

So if a cheetah decides to get this close to the camera, there’s really only one thing to do…

A tail that works like a steering wheel. 🐆💨

When a cheetah reaches incredible speeds, running in a straight line is only part of the challenge. The real skill comes when its prey suddenly changes direction.

That’s where the tail comes in.

A cheetah’s long, muscular tail acts almost like a counterbalance and steering system. As it races after prey, the tail helps it maintain balance, make rapid turns and change direction without losing control.

Combined with its flexible spine, powerful hind legs and semi-retractable claws, this gives the cheetah remarkable control during a high-speed chase.

So while those famous long legs provide the speed, the tail helps make sure all that speed can actually be controlled.

Because being fast is one thing…

Being able to turn at full speed is another. 🤍🐾
