Here’s what transpired at the Grand Parade in Cape Town yesterday 🎙️

LGSETA Provincial Specialist Ms Aneeka Jacobs joined the Community Pulse team on Radio 786 during the DHET Budget Vote Skills Exhibition to unpack opportunities within the local government sector.

Speaking on youth empowerment and access to information, Ms Jacobs encouraged young people to make use of the technology already in their hands, do their research, and attend career days hosted at schools and within communities.

“Most young people have access to smartphones. Use them to search and explore the 21 SETAs and the opportunities they offer,” she said.

The discussion highlighted how SETAs continue to create pathways for learnerships, internships, skills development, and career opportunities that empower young people and strengthen communities.

Yesterday, the LGSETA ETQA team and the Community of Expert Practitioners (CEP) under-took a hands-on approach before realigning the historically registered environmental qualifications, particularly the Occupational Certificate: Environmental Co-ordinator.

With municipalities under increasing pressure to divert organic waste from landfills, sustainable solutions are becoming critical in supporting the green economy, environmental sustainability, and future-focused skills development.

To enhance the qualification development process, the team visited Madam Waste, an organisation driving innovative waste management solutions through biogas generation technologies and composting.

The visit provided first-hand insight into how organic waste can be diverted from landfills and transformed into renewable gas, electricity, and nutrient-rich compost and liquid fertiliser through circular waste solutions.

The visit was aimed at strengthening partnerships with industry to enhance work-based experience and employability. Industry insights can assist learners identify entrepreneurship opportunities within the waste and circular sector.

The exposure is crucial as the country transition from a linear (take-make-dispose) to a circular economy that promotes environmental stewardship.

Yesterday, the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr. Mimmy Gondwe, visited the Emlandeleni Community Learning Centre (CLC) in Ndwedwe, KZN. Her mission was clear: to bridge the gap between rural talent and higher education opportunities.

In a massive win for the community, Dr. Gondwe announced that the Department has secured R5 million specifically for the upgrades and restoration of the Emlandeleni Centre!

The good news didn’t stop there as the Services SETA committed a staggering R90 million to support Community Education and Training (CET) colleges nationally. This means, all 9 CETs will receive R10 million each. Funding will be used to improve infrastructure and equip centres to better serve their communities.

“Our goal is to ensure that the Learning Centres are equipped to serve the community and expand access to skills development and learning. She reiterated that it is never too late to learn and that Centres like Emlandeleni are a direct response to addressing unemployment.” — Dr. Mimmy Gondwe

The visit was supported by a strong delegation including various SETAs, Higher Health, and GCIS. These stakeholders didn’t just show up, they stepped up, announcing various commitments and pledges to uplift the Ndwedwe community.

The day was filled with excitement as learners and community members engaged directly with Dr. Gondwe and the various exhibitors, exploring new pathways to a brighter future.
