Restoring Futures Through Education: 155 CPUT Graduates Receive Long-Awaited Qualifications

Attending the certificate handover ceremony at the South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre (SARETEC) on the Bellville Campus of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) was a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of education and the importance of removing barriers to opportunity.

The event marked a significant milestone for 155 graduates who finally received their qualifications after years of waiting due to outstanding student debt. The atmosphere was filled with gratitude, relief and celebration as graduates, accompanied by their families and loved ones, gathered to witness the culmination of a long and often difficult journey.

The initiative was made possible through a partnership between Services SETA and CPUT, with Services SETA providing a R9.3 million intervention to settle historical student debt. More than a financial contribution, the programme restored dignity, renewed hope and unlocked opportunities for graduates whose careers and aspirations had been placed on hold.

Throughout the ceremony, beneficiaries shared moving testimonies about the challenges they faced and the impact that receiving their qualifications would have on their lives. For many, the handover represented more than a certificate; it symbolised the chance to pursue employment opportunities, further their studies and achieve personal and professional goals that had been delayed for years.

The initiative also reflects South Africa’s broader commitment to skills development, educational access and economic inclusion. At a time when the country continues to prioritise youth empowerment and employment creation, programmes such as this demonstrate the critical role that partnerships between educational institutions and sector bodies can play in changing lives.

What stood out most during the ceremony was the collective commitment to ensuring that no graduate is left behind because of financial hardship. The collaboration between Services SETA and CPUT serves as an inspiring example of how institutions can work together to create meaningful change and invest in the future of South Africa’s young professionals.

As the graduates proudly received their certificates, it was clear that this initiative had done more than clear debt—it had restored hope, opened doors and provided a renewed sense of possibility for 155 individuals ready to contribute their skills and talents to the country’s development.

Health and Wellness outreach in Graceland and Prince Valley Communities

Today, 28 May 2026, the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), together with the Western Cape Government Health and Wellness and Western Cape Liquor Authority, hosted a rotational health and wellness community outreach in Graceland and Prince Valley in Beaufort West. The initiative aimed to bring essential government information and services directly to residents, ensuring that communities have easier access to support and assistance close to home.

The activation brought together several government departments and stakeholders, creating a one-stop service platform for community members. Participating partners included Legal Aid South Africa, Right to Care South Africa, the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), South African Police Service, Department of Employment and Labour, the Karoo National Park, the Western Cape Government Department of Social Development and Community Development Workers Programme and Beaufort West Municipality.

Residents were able to engage directly with officials, ask questions, receive information and access a variety of services without needing to travel long distances. Services offered included health and wellmess checks, employment and labour advice, voter education and registration information, youth development opportunities, legal support services, social assistance information, safety and crime prevention awareness, as well as health and wellness support.

The rotational activation forms part of ongoing efforts by government to strengthen community outreach and improve service delivery in rural and underserved areas. By taking services directly to communities such as Graceland and Prince Valley, government departments continue to promote active citizenship, accessibility and responsive governance.

GCIS and its partners remain committed to ensuring that communities are informed, empowered and connected to available government services.
