SASCO STATEMENT ON THE PROGRESSIVE RESIDENCE WINDOW REPLACEMENT PROJECT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF FORT HARE (UFH) ALICE CAMPUS

The South African Students Congress (SASCO) at the University of Fort Hare (UFH), Alice Campus, welcomes and celebrates the tangible progress being made regarding the infrastructure overhaul and fixing of broken windows across various student residences.

As the vanguard of student struggles, SASCO has consistently maintained that human dignity and a conducive living environment are non-negotiable prerequisites for academic excellence. For too long, our students have had to endure sub-standard infrastructure, prompting our continuous, uncompromising engagements with institutional leadership.

Following our intense, direct interventions alongside the Alice Campus Central Housing Committee (CHC), we are pleased to witness that contractors are actively on site. The systematic roll-out of the window replacement project across major residences—including Nkandla, Beda 1 & 2, Ferguson, and the Student Village—is a victory for the student populace.

We commend the CHC for working hand-in-hand with student leadership to monitor the project's ex*****on and ensure that the appointed companies work concurrently to minimise delays and fast-track completion. This progress proves that when student structures remain focused on the material conditions of students, practical delivery is achieved.

However, SASCO remains vigilant. We view this as just one step in our broader mandate to eliminate all forms of infrastructural negligence on our campus. We call on the service providers to maintain speed and efficiency, and we urge students to cooperate with the teams as they enter rooms to restore their living spaces.
SASCO will continue to keep its boots on the ground, monitoring this project until the last window pane is securely fixed. The struggle for safe, dignified, and comfortable student accommodation continues!

PYA STATEMENT ON THE SUCCESSFUL DOOR TO DOOR MOBILISATION AND STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF FORT HARE

The PYA welcomes with pride the success of yesterday’s grassroots mobilisation and student engagement campaign at the University of Fort Hare, Alice Campus.

On 14 September 2026, the ANCYL National Leadership, led by National Deputy President Comrade Francisco Dyantyi, together with Eastern Cape Provincial Secretary Comrade Zuko Lugalo and the Regional Executive Committee, visited the University of Fort Hare for a door to door mobilisation campaign across student residences.

The campaign was aimed at engaging directly with students and understanding the challenges affecting their daily lives. Leadership listened to students on issues including funding, accommodation, safety, academic exclusion and other challenges facing students at the institution.

The PYA remains firm in its position that institutions of higher learning must be accessible to the children of the poor and the working class. No student should be denied an opportunity to study because of their material conditions.

Today’s engagement further demonstrates the PYA’ commitment to strengthening the Progressive Youth Alliance and remaining rooted among students and young people.

We appreciate the students of Fort Hare for their openness, participation and meaningful engagement with the leadership. The response from students demonstrated the importance of taking political leadership directly to the people and understanding their lived realities.

We encourage students to vote for SASCO in the upcoming elections on the 8th of October & for Local Government elections on the 4th of November . Our candidate Cde Luba will be running for the ward .

💛💛💛RAZZMATAZZ: WE PAINTED ALICE CAMPUS YELLOW! 💛💛💛

Yesterday, SASCO Alice Branch brought the energy to Alice Campus with a powerful and successful Razzmatazz programme!

What we witnessed was more than just a celebration. It was a demonstration of student unity, organisation and collective power. We painted the campus yellow, but we also made a statement: student politics belongs amongst students, on the ground and at the forefront of the struggles they face.

The incredible energy and participation from students was a reflection of the hard work our comrades have been putting in. We salute every SASCO comrade who contributed to making yesterday a success. Your commitment to building and strengthening the organisation does not go unnoticed.

We also extend a revolutionary thank you to our sister branch for joining us and adding to the strength and spirit of the programme. When we organise together, we demonstrate the power of a united student movement.

Razzmatazz reminded us that our movement is alive, organised and ready to engage. We are not here simply to occupy spaces. We are here to organise, mobilise and advance the interests of students.

Yesterday, we painted Alice Campus yellow. 💛

Today, we organise.

Tomorrow, we continue the struggle.

A SUCCESSFUL ENGAGEMENT WITH THE ANC NATIONAL DSG

Today, SASCO was proud to host the Deputy Secretary General of the African National Congress, who joined us in engaging directly with students and hearing their concerns, aspirations and experiences.

The visit was a resounding success and demonstrated the importance of political leadership that is present, accessible and willing to listen. Through this engagement, SASCO once again reaffirmed its position as a student movement that is rooted in the struggles of students and committed to advancing their interests.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Provincial Councillors who took the time to join us and contribute to this important engagement. Your presence strengthened the programme and demonstrated the continued commitment to engaging with young people and students.

SASCO remains unapologetic in its commitment to student interests. We do not only speak about transformation, access and student development; we organise, mobilise and act.

As we move towards the elections, we call on all students to remember where their interests are represented. On 8 October 2026, vote SASCO and continue to strengthen a movement that puts students first.

We further encourage all eligible students and young people to exercise their democratic right in the Local Government Elections on 4 November 2026. Your vote is your voice. Use it to shape the future of your communities.

Yesterday , SASCO successfully conducted a door-to-door engagement with students, creating a platform to listen directly to their concerns, understand the challenges they face, and engage with them on issues affecting their student experience.

The engagement allowed us to strengthen our connection with students and reaffirm our commitment to being present where students are. We believe that meaningful student leadership begins with listening, understanding and taking action.

SASCO remains committed to engaging students directly and working towards solutions that advance the interests of the student community.

As part of our continued efforts to engage directly with students and strengthen student participation on campus, we will be embarking on a door to door mobilisation campaign.

This is an opportunity to engage with students where they are, listen to their concerns, share our programme of action and encourage collective participation in the struggles that affect the student population.

STATEMENT ON THE POLITICISATION OF FOOD PARCELS

The SASCO Alice Branch expresses its deep concern regarding the continued politicisation of food distribution to unfunded students by the EFF YC and YBMM structures.

The provision of food to students who are financially excluded and unable to afford basic meals should never become a contest for political recognition, ownership or organisational visibility. Students’ hunger is not a political trophy, nor should the basic dignity of an unfunded student be subjected to organisational squabbles.

We find it deeply concerning that students have been left confused and uncertain about access to food because political structures are more concerned with who receives recognition for providing assistance than with ensuring that students are actually fed.

Food is a basic need. It is not a campaign tool. It is not an opportunity for political point-scoring.

SASCO maintains that any initiative aimed at assisting unfunded students must be guided by the interests and dignity of students first. Organisations entrusted with student leadership have a responsibility to work towards solutions that serve students collectively, rather than creating unnecessary confusion around essential support.

We therefore call on the EFFYC and YBMM structures to put students before organisational interests and to stop politicising the provision of food to unfunded students.

The hunger of students should unite student leadership, not become another arena for political competition.

Students deserve food. Students deserve dignity. Students deserve leadership that puts their needs first.
