THIS MONTH IN CIVIL WAR HARRISON COUNTY: The Kentucky Central Railroad acquired the Covington and Lexington Railroad as a joint stock company under an agreement dated January 1, 1861; McDowell Guards (Cynthiana) commissioned on January 26, 1861, one of four Harrison Co. State Guard Units. They eventually joined the Confederate Army; in January 1862, a United States Court in Covington indicted State Rep. Lucius Desha for treason allegedly for recruiting for the CSA and issued a warrant for his arrest (he was later acquitted); the U. S. Sanitary Commission in Cincinnati sent supplies to a Cynthiana military post hospital (location unknown) according to a Cincinnati newspaper in January 1863; in late January 1865 Confederate Colonel George Jessee with seventy-five men skirted by Lair’s Station traveling east, beginning guerrilla activity as the war was ending. The CBF would like to share this haunting tale for Halloween 🎃 ...
At this site on June 11, 1864 United States Army (Union) Colonel Sternum Femur led his regiment in the defense of Cynthiana against the Confederate Army forces led by Colonel James T. Bone. Colonel Femur, riding his trusty battle steed, Bonejangle, successfully delayed Colonel Bone’s forces until General Stephen Bourbonfridge’s forces arrived and routed the Confederate troops. Sadly, both Colonel Femur and Bonejangle succumbed to leg wounds and are buried on this site. Or, maybe not...☠

Our flag trivia winner is ... Steven Brown !
A little history on this flag, units of the Orphan Brigade carried an unusual pattern battle flag. Also called the "Beaureguard Battle Flag", a brigade flag, there is little information on these flags. The flags were issued to the regiments of Gen. Breckinridge's division in 1862. One of the surviving originals was identified to belong to the 4th Kentucky Infantry.
Keep watching... we have 2 more flags to post this year! If you are a recent follower, the "Battle of Summer" flag trivia is a way for the CBF to pass along civil war flag education while winning some cool prizes. The CBF also sends you the flag and a letter stating when and where the flag was flown!
