Forging the Future Fleet! ️⚓

From classroom lectures in Annapolis to active shipyards across the country, U.S. Naval Academy midshipmen are getting direct experience in how America builds and sustains its battle fleet.

Through USNA’s new shipbuilding summer internship program this summer, future naval officers conducted research alongside top industry experts and even produced submarine concept design research that was selected for presentation at a national conference!

By pairing rigorous academics in naval architecture and economics with hands-on shipyard experience, USNA is ensuring its graduates are ready to lead and strengthen our national defense from day one.

Twenty-five years later, we remember.
On September 11, 2001, our nation was forever changed. Today, we honor the 14 Naval Academy alumni among the 2,977 lives lost that day, remember their families and communities who carried their loved ones’ memory forward, and pay tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the first responders and servicemembers who answered the call.
We remember. We honor. We carry forward.

As they face off against Air Force on the pitch tonight, we would like to recognize the Navy Rugby team captains Trevor Gayron and Edmund Soeder as our .

MIDN Gayron hails from Farmingdale, New York, and majors in English here at the Academy. His family carries a long tradition of service within his family, beginning with his grandfather’s service as a Marine during World War II. He hopes to continue his family’s legacy of service in the Navy.

His favorite memory at USNA was during his Plebe Year, when his company earned the title of ‘Iron Company’ during Sea Trials. “Every single company mate had one moment where they shined that day. We won because of everyone,” he said.

In his free time he plays the harmonica and guitar. He’s ready for the rugby season and more importantly to BEAT ARMY later on this season. His favorite summer training was the opportunity to intern in Little Creek, Virginia where he found the experience beneficial to his future leadership in the Fleet.

MIDN Soeder hails from Mentor, Ohio, and he majors in Ocean Engineering at the Academy.

“Growing up, I learned the importance of living for others, and the clearest path for me was through service to our country. Being surrounded by high-performing individuals drives me to better myself every day. The lifelong relationships forged along the way are what make it all worth it.”

He is most excited this year for Service Assignment Day. “I cannot wait to see where everyone is headed and to celebrate all of our hard work with my friends.”

Last year’s N-Star rugby game against Army was MIDN Soeder’s favorite Navy memory. They were able to and clinched the win on Army’s home turf. On and off the Yard, he likes to stay involved with his faith and the outdoors. He’s a member of the Catholic Midshipman club along with being a Cleveland sports fan, co****le enthusiast, and avid backpacker.

His favorite summer training was NOLS Mountaineering in Alaska. “A three-week expedition in the Alaskan backcountry was an eye-opening experience. It taught me the importance of living in the moment alongside great people and showed me just how invaluable peanut butter really is.”

We’re reflecting on the words of U.S. Naval Academy instructor, LtCol. Greata, as he spoke to midshipmen last year before the Brigade’s yearly tradition of the 9/11 stair run. While running through the halls and up and down flights of stairs, our midshipmen remember those who served and lost their lives 25 years ago, including the 14 alumni who died that day. Let it be you who commemorates the heroes who answered the call. Let it be you who is ready for responsibility when the moment comes.

Today, the Midshipman Action Group brought the U.S. Naval Academy community together in T-Court to place 2,977 flags along Stribling Walk, honoring the lives lost in the September 11 attacks. A moving afternoon of remembrance, reflection, and honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The U.S. Naval Academy welcomed Professor Jonathan Wilker from Purdue University for the 2026 Michelson Memorial Lecture.

Wilker’s lecture, “From the Beach to the Fleet: Biological and Biomimetic Adhesives,” explored how marine organisms such as mussels, oysters, and barnacles have inspired the development of powerful underwater adhesives. His research is helping advance potential applications for the Navy, including underwater ship repair, leak prevention, corrosion control, and other operational capabilities.

The annual Michelson Memorial Lecture is sponsored by the Class of 1969 to honor Albert A. Michelson, USNA Class of 1873 and America’s first Nobel Laureate in science, whose groundbreaking work on the speed of light began at the Naval Academy.

The series continues Michelson’s legacy by bringing leading scholars to the Yard to inspire the next generation of warfighters, scientists, and engineers.

This past week, the U.S. Naval Academy and the USNA Alumni Association and Foundation honored ADM Patrick M. Walsh ’77, USN (Ret.), VADM Mark I. Fox ’78, USN (Ret.), LtGen William D. Beydler ’81, USMC (Ret.), and CAPT Christopher J. Cassidy ’93, USN (Ret.) as Distinguished Graduates, recognizing their exceptional achievements, service, and lasting impact on the Naval Academy and the nation.

The Distinguished Graduate Award celebrates alumni whose accomplishments exemplify the highest ideals of the Naval Academy and inspire generations of future leaders.
