As an elected leader, I have a responsibility to ensure my social media platforms are respectful, safe, and fact-based. This includes ensuring, to the greatest extent possible, that residents who choose to engage online are not subjected to bullying, harassment, misinformation, defamatory statements, or hate speech.
In discussions with the previous Integrity Commissioner, and in line with the practices of other municipal leaders, I have implemented a clear social media policy (full guidelines are available on my website at www.mrakas.ca). This sets expectations for engagement and helps protect residents from harassment, misinformation, and hate.
Recently, my accounts have been inundated with comments and behaviour that violate these common sense standards. Some of the most recent comments—particularly on topics such as the death of Heiniu and the Pride event in Town Square—have been unacceptable and reinforce the need for community standards in social media. Quite frankly, some have been disgusting.
I have worked to remove inappropriate content and block those engaging in egregious conduct. My social media platforms will not be used as tools to intimidate others, spread misinformation, or false statements, or to pursue personal agendas.
Many residents have told me they want to participate but are afraid of being attacked online.
That matters. Everyone deserves to engage without being targeted or intimidated. They must remain spaces where residents can engage openly, respectfully, and without fear.
I recognize that some past and current Aurora politicians have in the past taken a different approach to managing social media – choosing to pursue legal action against residents. However, I do not believe that suing residents for their online commentary is the right thing to do.
Instead, I believe a clearly stated social media policy—applied fairly, consistently, and in good faith—is the more responsible way to manage engagement.
My focus will continue to be on maintaining a space where people feel safe to participate, share their views, and engage respectfully.
