Congratulations to the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2026, officially introduced at Committee last night!

This outstanding class includes:
Joe Bentolila (Builder – Hockey)
George Biondic (Athlete – Running)
Paul Rosen (Athlete – Hockey)
Shayne Stevenson (Athlete – Hockey)

And a historic first for the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame with the inaugural Team Induction honouring the legendary Aurora Church Dodgers.

These remarkable individuals and team have left a lasting legacy on sport in Aurora and beyond. I’m looking forward to joining family, friends, and members of our community on November 5 as we celebrate their achievements and formally welcome them into what I believe is the best sports hall of fame in Ontario — the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame.

Congratulations to all of this year’s inductees!

Today, on what would have been his birthday, I am honoured to proclaim June 3 as Sam Saberi’s Day of Giving and Generosity in the Town of Aurora.

Sam’s kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to helping others left a lasting impact on our community. As we remember Sam, I encourage everyone to honour his memory by performing a simple act of kindness and making a difference in someone’s day. Together, we can continue the spirit of generosity that Sam embodied every day.

Tonight, Council took a clear position on the matter regarding the OLT appeal on 161 Heathwood Heights. Council directed our Town Solicitor to oppose the appeal related to the Official Plan and Zoning By-law Amendment applications and authorized the retention of external legal counsel and any necessary experts to defend the Town’s position before the Ontario Land Tribunal.

I want to be very clear about why I support that decision.

What is being proposed here is the demolition of a single-family home and the construction of five new homes on a single residential lot. Simply put, this proposal is not appropriate for this neighbourhood. It is not consistent with the character of the community, it does not respect the established lot fabric, and it does not align with the vision set out in Aurora’s Official Plan.

Let’s be honest: this application seeks to capitalize on the prestige and desirability of the Heathwood Heights neighbourhood. The value being pursued here is derived from the character, scale, and established nature of this community. That is not a planning rationale. Good planning is about compatibility, fit, and respecting the policies that guide growth in our town.

I also want to acknowledge the impact applications like this have on residents. When proposals are brought forward that clearly challenge the intent of our Official Plan, it creates uncertainty and anxiety within the community. Residents begin to wonder whether their neighbourhood is next and whether the policies that were put in place to protect community character still matter. Those concerns are real, and they deserve to be heard.

Aurora’s Official Plan and Zoning By-laws exist for a reason. They provide a framework for responsible growth while protecting the unique character of our neighbourhoods. This proposal does the opposite. It represents overdevelopment of a single lot and risks establishing a precedent that could fundamentally alter Heathwood Heights and similar neighbourhoods throughout Aurora.

This is not about opposing growth. Aurora has embraced growth where it belongs — along major corridors, near transit, within designated intensification areas, and in locations identified through careful planning. We have approved thousands of new homes across our community. But growth must occur in the right places and in a manner that respects the planning framework residents and Council have worked hard to establish.

Tonight’s decision sends an important message. Aurora will stand behind its Official Plan. We will defend the character of our neighbourhoods. And as I have done for the past eight years as your Mayor, I will continue to stand up for residents, protect the integrity of our planning policies, and ensure that growth happens on Aurora’s terms — not at the expense of the communities that make our town special.

I am pleased Council has directed our legal team to vigorously defend the Town’s position before the Ontario Land Tribunal, and I will continue to stand with residents in protecting what makes Aurora such a special place to call home.

As an elected leader, I have a responsibility to ensure my social media platforms are respectful, safe, and fact-based. This includes ensuring, to the greatest extent possible, that residents who choose to engage online are not subjected to bullying, harassment, misinformation, defamatory statements, or hate speech.

In discussions with the previous Integrity Commissioner, and in line with the practices of other municipal leaders, I have implemented a clear social media policy (full guidelines are available on my website at www.mrakas.ca). This sets expectations for engagement and helps protect residents from harassment, misinformation, and hate.

Recently, my accounts have been inundated with comments and behaviour that violate these common sense standards. Some of the most recent comments—particularly on topics such as the death of Heiniu and the Pride event in Town Square—have been unacceptable and reinforce the need for community standards in social media. Quite frankly, some have been disgusting.

I have worked to remove inappropriate content and block those engaging in egregious conduct. My social media platforms will not be used as tools to intimidate others, spread misinformation, or false statements, or to pursue personal agendas.

Many residents have told me they want to participate but are afraid of being attacked online.

That matters. Everyone deserves to engage without being targeted or intimidated. They must remain spaces where residents can engage openly, respectfully, and without fear.

I recognize that some past and current Aurora politicians have in the past taken a different approach to managing social media – choosing to pursue legal action against residents. However, I do not believe that suing residents for their online commentary is the right thing to do.
Instead, I believe a clearly stated social media policy—applied fairly, consistently, and in good faith—is the more responsible way to manage engagement.

My focus will continue to be on maintaining a space where people feel safe to participate, share their views, and engage respectfully.
