CHRA’s Housing on the Hill Day was another productive one of meetings and advocacy on behalf of affordable, accessible and supportive housing!

ICC attended meetings with representatives from Fred Victor, The Agency for Co-operative Housing , and the Housing Research Collaborative to discuss the housing challenges facing communities across Canada and met with MP’s Yasir Naqvi and James Maloney.

ICC Board member Jonathan Bradshaw and his team also met with MP’s Dr. Helena Jaczek and Charles Sousa, to advance these important conversations.

At a session with Build Canada Homes | Maisons Canada , ICC Chair Gary Gladstone advocated for a dedicated carve-out for developmental services in NHS 2.0, similar to the approach included in the original National Housing Strategy. He also highlighted the need for greater inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Canada’s housing strategy.

The response was positive, and we will continue pushing to ensure that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are not left behind as Canada’s next generation of housing investments takes shape.

Housing is a foundation for inclusion, dignity and opportunity. We need to make sure that foundation is accessible to everyone.

We were pleased to be able to connect with numerous elected officials, including Minister Gregor Robertson, and MP Scott Aitchison.

ICC is pleased to participate in the Summit on Housing and the Canadian Economy, co-sponsored by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, FCM, and Canadian Housing and Renewal Association.

The summit brought together leaders to discuss the connection between housing, health, economic growth and community prosperity.

ICC used the opportunity to reinforce a key message: when NHS 2.0 is released, there must be a continued carve-out for housing that supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities must be part of Canada’s housing strategy, with dedicated investments in accessible, affordable and supportive housing.

Yesterday, ICC Chair Gary Gladstone attended the launch of Growing Home, an innovative housing model hosted by SHS Inc., Extend-A-Family Kingston, SCS, and Surrey Place. An initiative generously sponsored in part by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)’ s NHS Solutions Lab program.

As a proud partner in this project, ICC is excited to support a new approach to housing for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Growing Home brings together individuals and families, community land trusts, support service providers, and government partners to create more deeply affordable, accessible, and supportive housing.

This important initiative is another step toward addressing the growing need for inclusive housing for people with diverse abilities.

We were also pleased to connect with several attendees and organizations who will be joining us for ICC’s upcoming Day on the Hill in November. We look forward to continuing these important conversations and working together to advance inclusive communities.
