Clevelanders grieve over demise of Whiskey Island’s Hulett ore unloaders; others say it’s time to move on

Throughout the world, people proudly leave less significant mementos of the predecessors contributions to their areas and nation's development and as a tribute to the inventors vision and the spirit of ingenuity. The Huletts helped the United States and the world counter aggression during World Wars One and Two plus many conflicts in between. The innovation and the efficiency of the majestic Hulett Ore Unloaders on Whiskey Island of Cleveland Ohio and at all the locations throughout the Great Lakes with their throughput to the steel mills of the Iron Ore, let our region and our nation embark in an economic upswing that expanded the middle class in America. In Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, what is it about its leaders that they have no faith in achieving big dreams and in turn block any visionaries from moving forward to deliver on something that is achievable. Location is the issue here not the ability to raise funds. Where is Cleveland Cliffs, protectors of the Steamer William G. Mather, and which ship would not have been built without the Huletts demand for such a ship? Where is Sherwin Williams, without the prosperity delivered by the Huletts, would not have prospered (they do have a Hulett color). Please visit Citizens Vision, the champion volunteers for the Huletts and many projects, website (www.citizensvision.org) and see what options there are to have the Hulett Ore Unloaders stand tall again. Money is not the problem, will to accomplish it is.

Action required: Those who follow closely probably have heard that the Port Authority plans to scrap the remaining two Huletts, starting in March. The voices of the people and our leaders are key to saving them now. Please call Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb (216-664-2000) and county executive Chris Ronayne (216-443-7000) to express your opinion and demand that at least one entire Hulett is preserved.

A long public debate over whether a Hulett ore crane could be reassembled appears to be over,

Steve, since 1998 was a volunteer "Huletteer" of Citizens Vision and in our continued efforts to preserve the Huletts Ore Unloaders, the Steamship William G. Mather, the Cleveland Lighthouse with the Foghorn building at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River, Whiskey Island's Wendy Park and many other projects and civic activities that Citizens Vision had championed and/or participated in to improve and launch Northeast Ohio into the 21st Century. He was a dedicated supporter of events honoring Veterans, the military and their families with his sound expertise and system such as Joint Veterans Council of Cuyahoga County the June 14 Flag Day, U.S. Army Birthday and Naturalization Ceremony at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum as well as the Equal Honor For All and then Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 15 sponsored annual commemorations of March 29th Vietnam War Veterans Day and hosted by the City of Garfield Heights. He was the webmaster of the Citizens Vision website www.citizensvision.org and its Treasurer. We will miss his "can do" attitude and the work ethic to deliver on it, even overnight endurance testing projects that earned him the designation of "Huletteer".

Saving a significant industrial artifact - the Spruce Goose - great video of people dedicated and respectful of American ingenuity
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBPJhRCqXjA - Cleveland could tell a similar story about the Hulett Ore Unloaders and the two that are laying among the weeds and overgrown vegetation on Whiskey Island in pieces that need to be resurrected to their majestic presence in their entirety, standing tall next to the Steamship William G. Mather at our proposed Cuyahoga River location once the Scranton Channel is excavated.

In the early 1990s, the legendary Spruce Goose embarked on an incredible logistical move to its new home in Oregon. The trip would become the longest and mos...
