On this 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, the World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program joins the nation in remembering the loved ones lost, the courage of responders and survivors, and the families whose loved ones never came home. Their commitment to support one another in times of crisis is what makes this nation and its people great.

Over the past 40 years, the NIOSH Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program investigated several incidents where firefighters directing water into an oxygen-limiting silo unintentionally caused explosions. A recent silo fire and explosion killed two firefighters and injured thirteen more. The NIOSH Health Hazard Evaluation Program recently evaluated risks of muscle and joint injuries among water heater assembly line workers.

To minimize injuries, NIOSH recommended adjustable workstations, new antifatigue mats for frequent standing, and task rotation.

NIOSH suggested upgrading to vehicles with vibration dampening and controlling driving speeds to reduce vibration intensity.

For the workers at this facility, NIOSH recommended:
✅ identifying repetitive job tasks and implementing engineering controls
✅ increasing airflow in the spray cabinet to lower exposure to the chemical disinfectant
