Forty-five years ago, somebody in Iowa City decided older adults deserved a place of their own downtown. That place is still here, and on Thursday, September 17, the Iowa City Senior Center is taking it to The Englert Theatre.

45 Years of Community is a showcase of what actually happens inside the Iowa City Senior Center every single week. This free event will feature live music, dance, storytelling, and a preview of a documentary about the ICSC. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with showtime at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, 2026. The reception is right after in the Upper Lounge, so plan to stay and talk.

This , we’re taking a look at Burlington Street as it runs through Downtown Iowa City in the mid-to-late 1970s. You can see Burlington’s intersection with Madison Street, Capitol Street, and Clinton Street, and gasoline for sale for only $0.59 cents a gallon! Compared to a Google Street image from today, you can see this major road through town looks totally different.
