National Wildlife Federation Great Lakes Regional Center

National Wildlife Federation Great Lakes Regional Center NWF Great Lakes is the leader in protecting and restoring the Great Lakes for the people and wildlife depending on the world's greatest freshwater resource.

At the Great Lakes Regional Center, NWF works to restore the Great Lakes; stop invasive species; save Lake Superior from sulfide mining; safeguard the Great Lakes from the effects of climate change; defend the Great Lakes from oil pipeline spills; protect water in the Lakes with the Great Lakes Compact; improve the environments where people live; and connect kids with nature. The Great Lakes are t

he world’s largest surface freshwater ecosystem and contain 20 percent of all surface freshwater on the planet. The five lakes – Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario – are home to numerous fish and wildlife. But, the Great Lakes are fragile and face serious threats from invasive species, toxins, water diversion, wetland destruction, sewage overflows and climate change. Join us in protecting the Great Lakes for generations to come.

Happy ! 🦋🐝🌼 From bees to hummingbirds, butterflies, moths and more, pollinators play a critical role in helping our ecosystems flourish in the Great Lakes! By transferring pollen from flower to flower, they help a diversity of plants and crops reproduce. Not only does this provide healthy habitat and essential shelter for other animals, but it supports the food supply for people and countless wildlife species 🥗🥒. So the next time you’re shopping for groceries or at your local farmers market, you can thank the pollinators for their part in bringing food to your table!

📣Calling all Wisconsinites: Join us in Rhinelander, WI TODAY, 06/04 at 6:30pm for a public town hall to speak up for the future of our wild, roadless forests.

🌲Established in 2001 by the U.S. Forest Service, the Roadless Area Conservation Rule is one of the most important conservation measures in history. It supports wildlife habitat, clean water, recreation & local economies. It follows sound wildlife science. It provides a balanced, flexible resource management approach. And it could soon be repealed.

➡️If you love spending time in public forestlands and want to see them protected, come and make your voices heard!

🔎ABOUT THE EVENT:
The event’s program will begin promptly at 6:30 with an introductory program that will provide background information about the history of the Roadless Rule. After, the mic will open up for public to make comments. These will be recorded, transcribed, and uploaded as written comments on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the repeal of the Roadless Rule.

🌍🌊 Happy World Biodiversity Day! The Great Lakes hold 1/5 of the world’s surface freshwater and are home to more than 3,500 species of plants and animals — from migratory birds to native fish, pollinators, and beyond. That means that our freshwater ecosystems anchor not just regional, but global biodiversity — we are part of an interconnected, living puzzle where every piece holds the rest together. On , we celebrate the vibrant web of life in our own backyard and the critical role that each species play in keeping the region, and the planet, healthy and thriving.

President of Bay Mills Indian Community, Whitney Gravelle, expresses her concerns about Line 5 in a recent article from The Northern Express. The aging pipeline runs through the Straits of Mackinac — an indispensable resource and the heartbeat of the Community, with deep ancestral bonds. “When that line ruptures, it will destroy not just resources but our culture and our way of life. How can we continue if the waters are polluted?” Gravelle asks.

📣📍GOOD NEWS: A Wisconsin judge has hit pause on some construction of the Line 5 reroute in the northern part of the state. In order to proceed with work at various stream crossings, Enbridge needs additional permits under Wisconsin law. The delay in obtaining them could threaten the reroute’s required completion by mid-November 2027. While this is a welcome ruling, the fight to shut down Line 5 isn’t over yet.
