As we approach the end of the year, I am making an exciting transition to launch a new initiative. Some time ago, I shared with the Board of the Institute that I planned to pursue a project with urgency: create a sustained national dialogue and negotiation on the future of American self-governance—one that brings together federal and state leaders while meaningfully centering citizen voices. Given this moment in our country, I’ve decided to jump in with both feet, now.

I’ll share more about this work in the months ahead, and I’d welcome the chance to connect individually if it’s of interest.

During more than 3 years at the Institute, I’ve focused on convening national leaders to strengthen our governing institutions and to model that there are principles central to our form of constitutional democracy that must rise above partisanship. On top of that we expanded our civic education programs that were in 14 states in 2022 to now operating in 45, and we recently completed the most successful fundraising effort in the Institute’s history. It’s been quite a run and I'm proud of that.

I’m grateful to the extraordinary board and staff whose dedication and engagement just astounds me; the organization is in a strong position for the future. I’ve been asked to consult with the Institute for a period as a Senior Advisor to support a smooth leadership transition, so I am sure I will see many of you around in the meantime!

My father’s obituary is below with details for his service this Saturday, March 15th.

We have truly loved all of the wonderful personal stories that so many have shared in recent days. Thank you. And we look forward to continuing to learn how he has impacted the community he cherished!

I am incredibly honored to share that I have been selected as the next CEO of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute. There is a lot that has me excited about this new challenge, including that the Institute is moving towards more involvement in promoting national dialogue. It is a true fit; a role that combines my years of work on international negotiations with my political background here at home.

The job requires that I start immediately, and in order to do that I will resign from my position as state Senator effective this Sunday, September 25th. At this point in the two-year legislature term we have no more formal sessions (which ended for the year on August 1st), no more roll call votes are anticipated, I have previously announced I was not running for re-election, and we are past the primaries to identify my successor.

I am working closely with the Representatives in the district to cover ongoing needs, my staff will remain in place continuing work for the district until the New Year, and if needed Senate colleagues will also assist with official work in the State House.

I have been deeply honored to be a state senator in the district I grew up in. Working closely with so many of you to stand up for the region and take on the big issues that matter, together. I am excited about the work we will continue to do for Massachusetts and our nation.

Not a bad day: started with a ground breaking ceremony at the Greylock Glen at the base of Mt. Greylock with Gov Charlie Baker, marking the end of TWO GENERATIONS of work to bring investment to Adams and this gem of outdoor recreation and tourism.

Then off to Williamsburg to celebrate tens of millions of dollars to towns receiving state help for investments in climate mitigation and adaptation as we confront more and more climate disasters.
