This week, members of the City Council took a trip out to the High Plains Arboretum to learn more about the ongoing restoration and improvements being made.

So far, the new drip system has greatly improved the efficiency of the irrigation capabilities. This allows the Arboretum to reduce water use by placing water exactly where it is needed. With the new drip system, it will be much easier to get new trees established and keep the older trees healthy.

Additionally, the headhouse, greenhouse, and lath house construction will completely restore the three buildings and also make them ADA accessible. Abatement of lead-based paint and asbestos has been completed, and reconstruction has begun. These buildings were constructed in the 1930's and the restoration will make them practically brand new again so they're ready for the next 90 years. Once completed in the late fall, the greenhouse and lath house will be used for propagating the plants at the arboretum so these tough trees can be more readily available for planting in the community.
