Prescribed fire is one of our most important and efficient tools for managing invasive species, restoring native prairie, maintaining open oak/hickory woodlands, and ensuring habitat diversity for wildlife!

Prescribed fires are carefully planned and executed. Certified staff with specific fire training plan, conduct, and evaluate prescribed fire in areas of forests, prairies, savanna, wetlands, and crop fields each spring and fall when meteorological conditions are optimal for safety and effectiveness.

Our properties may be performing prescribed burns this March/April. If visiting, you may see smoke. Portions of the parks will be closed during fire operations. The affected areas will reopen when the prescribed burn is complete. You may call the property directly if you have additional questions. Find contact information: stateparks.IN.gov.

You can learn more about prescribed fire at on.IN.gov/prescribed-fire.

Spring Beauties! This early spring flower has white to pink or pink-striped petals, which turn toward sunshine and close up at night and during cloudy weather.

Be on the lookout for these little treasures as spring approaches quickly! Remember to ONLY look; no picking of the wildflowers, please.

The Harbinger of Spring, also called Salt and Pepper, belongs to the carrot family. The white petals and dark anthers (where the pollen is made) inspired the salt and pepper name. The tiny flowers usually appear before it’s leaves. It is one of the earliest bloomers, hence the name! This small flower blooms in early March and can be found into early April.

Look for this spring ephemeral in the shelter of logs or beech leaves. Please remember to leave the flowers where you found them, so that the emerging pollinators have food, and so the next person may enjoy their beauty!
