🚨Newly obtained government records reveal how Canada's federal regulator responded to repeated problems involving monkeys imported for research, raising serious questions about enforcement and accountability.
For endangered long-tailed macaques shipped to Canada for research, import paperwork is supposed to serve as a safeguard against disease, illegal trade, and animal welfare risks. A new release of records from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), obtained in September 2026, shows how little that paperwork was worth.
It also shows something more troubling. When the CFIA caught Charles River Laboratories breaking the quarantine rules meant to contain disease, it chose, in its own words, not to get tougher.
Our new records brief, Privileged Partner: How Canada's Regulator Became Charles River's Compliance Consultant, walks through those records.
