Our program today was so inspiring with Elena Busova, the Director of Pewabic Street Community Garden in the city of Houghton. The gardens have a right history, originally they were self-funded which was expensive for materials and soil. During the first years the gardens were grown together and the produce was donated to Omega House. After a few years, the gardens were expanded to 7 large beds, allowing the garden to be split into individual plots that could be assigned. But there were still challenges in improvements and maintenance and a group of board members and volunteers started writing grants and were able to fund 6 more raised beds and an irrigation system. Three of the 6 beds are part of a successful school garden project, where students first visit in September to learn about the garden and then return to plant in spring. Produce goes to the school's food giveaway program as well as the food bank and Omega House. Pewabic Community Gardens is still growing the organization, for example, consulting with local families on how to garden at their own homes. Another example is hosting field trips and group tours to spread knowledge and awareness about gardening. They are also working to make the garden more sustainable, including receiving status as a 501c3 nonprofit organization, which provides more options for fundraising and applying for grants. Last fall one of the board members applied for grant and got funds from the Keweenaw Community Foundation that funds a pilot program for gardening classes. Currently the gardens have a wait list of 16-20 people, so communicating with the city Houghton to explore possible solutions. Volunteering is always a good way to start learning!

Our weekly meeting on May 28th was graced by Kaleigh White from Breakwater Credit Union. Kaleigh shared the results of several efforts to promote financial literacy for youths and adults in the Copper Country. For example, April was national financial literacy month and Breakwater FCU completed an impressive amount of engagement with local youth. They provided books for young kids (a story about bunnies using carrots to represent money) and held a banking fair for kids to visit different booths to complete and activity to earn play money, and then spend it at the prize store. Thanks for all you do Breakwater Federal Credit Union !

We are all about Service Above Self. Thanks to our nimble crew that dedicated a couple hours on a Saturday morning to tidy up the Pilgrim River stretch of US41. It was also the Rotary International Day of Service, and we are humbled and awed to know that there were thousands of clubs across the globe chipping in to make the world a better place.

Our noon meeting on Thursday, April 23rd featured speaker John Griffith, who spoke about conservation and global warming. Many things we do as busy citizens of this great planet is powered by energy much of which is fueled by coal, gas, and oil which contribute greenhouse gases to the atmosphere and change earth's climate. Nature is able to take up some of those greenhouse gases, locking up carbon in plants, trees, soil, and wetlands. Preserving natural lands is one strategy in balancing the carbon cycle, and John is working right here in the Keweenaw to preserve forestland that is vital to our way of life.
His organization, American Songbird, a 501c3 nonprofit conservation organization, is purchasing 17,315 acres of Boreal Hardwood Transition Forest east/upstream of Five Mile Point Road in Allouez Twp, Keweenaw County, including the bulk of the 11,098-acre Gratiot River Watershed, 11.5 miles of the main stem of the Gratiot River, 5.6 miles of the Phoenix Cliffs escarpment (edge of the Keweenawan Rift Valley), 315 species of birds (focus species: Evening Grosbeak), 67,500 tons of annual carbon sequestration, 30 miles of Silent Sports Trails, 15 miles of Equestrian Trails, and 9.6 miles of State Trail 3 corridor (snowmobile, ATV).

American Songbird has $20 million in hand or expended; the final $10 million must be raised by December 18, 2026. The big dollars will be raised from private donors and foundations, but only if broad general support is demonstrated. Please visit www.GratiotRiverWatershed.org for more information, maps, and photos, and please consider contributing $5+ via the website (the goal is 2,500 $5 donations). If you are part of an organization, please write a “To Whom it May Concern” letter in support of the project and deliver to American Songbird at PO Box 2, Ahmeek, MI 49901 or via email at [email protected]
You may also contact John Griffith, ASMAR Keweenaw Representative at [email protected] or text/phone at 906 370-3494.

Today we hosted guests from the Houghton High School Interact club, including a short presentation from Karis VonDolski and Reagan Aho, next year's outbound students. Reagan is bound for Austria and is learning German with help from a tutor; she was previously learning Japanese. Karis is going to South Korea and has been studying the language for 2 years! Our own inbound Yuna Ishíi and the Hancock Rotary Club's inbound Linda Lehner were also in attendance. Yuni is finishing up her year in the US and wants to be a teacher when she returns home to Hiroshima, Japan.
The Rotary Youth Exchange program is dependent on local host families; the benefits to hosting a student are plentiful. Reach out if you're interested in the program and we're happy to share more information.

Houghton Rotarians helping the mushers come home on Sunday. After 5 Rotary Club members Ann Campbell and Melissa Collard, along with many Copper Dog volunteers, and the local fire department and sheriff's department, kept sleds safe at a critical highway crossing. Just one of the many ways we work for our community, hand in hand with many other organizations and volunteers. We'd love for you to join us and make an even bigger positive impact!

Thanks today's guests, Sherri Middlemis-Brown and
Bobbie Dahlquist from the Angel Mission, which reported some remarkable expansion of services last year, but also a need for financial capital to make some additional improvements that will better help serve the community. Over the last year, they have responded to 25% more food pantry distributions, double the backpack registrations, and a 60% increase in Angel tree registrations, just to name a few. And they have been able to meet those needs partly due to doubling of the volunteer base this year, resulting in increased hours of operation. The mission also collaborates with other organizations like Salvation Army and local schools, food pantry.

Building renovations to restore a historic building in downtown Calumet have transformed the Angel Mission store and food pantry in recent years, but more funds are needed for electrical work and to make the upstairs offices and conference room habitable for community organizations to meet, but also to hold trainings such as navigating household finances.
