Indigenous Peoples' Day honors Native Americans, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians, recognizing their histories, cultures, resilience, and contributions to society.

The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department headquarters stands just across the street from the Huron Indian Cemetery, officially known as the Wyandot National Burying Ground. It is a powerful reminder of the enduring presence, history and contributions of Indigenous peoples in our community.

Established in 1843 following the forced displacement of the Wyandot Nation, the cemetery became the final resting place for many Native Americans. Though many graves remain unmarked, the grounds hold profound cultural and historical significance. In 2016, the Huron Indian Cemetery was designated a National Historic Landmark in recognition of its importance in preserving Indigenous heritage.

This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we pause to honor the Wyandot Nation and all Indigenous communities whose histories, cultures and contributions are woven into the fabric of Kansas City, Kansas. May we continue to recognize their legacy, reflect on the past and honor their lasting impact on our community.

Last night residents of KCK joined with faith leaders for Hands Across State as part of Faith & Blue Weekend. Positioned at key intersections across State Ave. they gathered to show that they understand that law enforcement works best when connected with and supported by their community. Chief Oakman, Sheriff Soptic and District Attorney Dupree along with members of KCKPD command, KCKFD, Commissioner Dr. Evelyn Hill and others board a bus and made their way across the route to express their gratitude. With so many to greet, the “Faith & Blue Express” took a little longer than expected, but eventually made it to 5th and State from The Legends!

Tonight we will gather in one location, Eisenhower Park for a movie night under the stars complete with popcorn, soda, nachos and candy for all who attend. Bring a blanket and lawn chairs and enjoy a night of community!
