Who is Amjad Youssef the primary suspect accused of perpetrating the Tadamon massacre?

- He is a First Lieutenant in Branch 227 (the Regional Branch) of the Military Intelligence Division, and one of the most prominent direct perpetrators of the Tadamon neighborhood massacre in Damascus on April 16, 2013—an atrocity that claimed the lives of dozens of innocent civilians.

- The Ministry of Interior apprehended him during a meticulously planned security operation carried out in the Al-Ghab Plain, in the Hama countryside, following several days of surveillance and tracking.

- Last year, Internal Security forces arrested a number of individuals implicated in the massacre; they confessed to committing multiple massacres within the neighborhood that resulted in the deaths of over 500 men and women, in addition to crimes involving the looting and pillaging of homes and property.

- *The Guardian* was the first major international media outlet to authoritatively and publicly reveal Amjad Youssef’s identity, doing so within its investigative report on the Tadamon massacre published in April 2022.

- The investigation relied on leaked videos dating back to April 16, 2013, in which Youssef—along with members of the former regime’s forces—appears in military uniform, ordering blindfolded and handcuffed civilians to run before shooting them and dumping their bodies into a pit filled with corpses.

- The video documented the ex*****on of 41 men before their bodies were set ablaze; it served as evidence of the mass ex*****ons committed within the neighborhood.

- Youssef was in charge of the neighborhood, where he perpetrated numerous violations and crimes against civilians.

- Residents of the neighborhood have documented the names of 288 victims of the massacre—an atrocity that stands as one in a series of massacres revealed by the mass graves discovered in Al-Tadamon.

- The video—along with the international investigation—provided further evidence of the crimes committed by the forces of the former regime against the Syrian people throughout the years of the revolution.
