Earlier this month, Claire’s Angels came together for the Niagara Region - Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure, and we’re still celebrating some incredible achievements!

One of our clients walked every step of the 1 km route — a huge improvement from last year! Another client took an interest in the event and chose to participate for the first time this year.

Everyone had a great time coming together to support an important cause, and we couldn’t be prouder!

Experiences like these give our clients opportunities to set goals, build confidence, try new things and participate in their communities in ways that are meaningful to them.

A big thank you to our clients, families and staff who helped make this event a success!

Every step, every achievement and every victory counts.

We enjoyed some extra-special cuddles and connection with our friends from Triple C Farm!

Pet therapy can offer many benefits for people living with the effects of a brain injury, including improved mood and reduced stress. But sometimes, the best part is simply having the chance to connect, explore, and try something new.

For some of our clients, this was their first time interacting with farm animals — bringing plenty of excitement, curiosity and, of course, lots of smiles!

Thank you to Triple C Farm for bringing these special visitors to HIRO and helping make the day one to remember!

Honouring Truth and Reconciliation Day.

Today, we’re making space to listen, learn and celebrate Indigenous voices and experiences.

Recently, one of our clients shared his culture and personal experiences with the HIRO community. He brought in his bannock recipe and taught the group how to make it, step by step. The bannock was delicious — and a few clients even asked for the recipe to try at home!

During the activity, he proudly shared that he is Cree and spoke about experiences that are meaningful to him. He talked about his journey from Winnipeg to Hamilton and how Hamilton has truly become home for him. He shared how much the encouragement, trust and kindness he has experienced here have meant to him, especially given some of his past experiences and how meaningful it has been to feel treated with such care and respect.

Most of all, it was wonderful to see him sharing, teaching, and connecting with others so confidently.

Listening is part of reconciliation. So is making space for people to share their stories. Thank you for sharing your story and helping us learn from your experiences.

In honour of Rowan’s Law Day — September 30.

A moment can change everything.

A fall. A collision. A hit to the head. What may seem like a small injury can have a lasting impact on someone’s life.

Rowan’s Law Day reminds us to know the signs of concussion, take them seriously and speak up when something doesn’t feel right.

At HIRO, we see the impact of acquired brain injury every day. Awareness, early recognition, and appropriate support are important parts of brain injury safety and care.

One moment. One injury. A lasting impact. Know the signs.

💗 Come see Claire’s Angels at Pen Centre TOMORROW! 💗

Our team of HIRO clients, families and staff is taking part in the Niagara Region - Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure (Oct 4) to support all Canadians impacted by breast cancer.

We’ll be at Pen Centre TOMORROW from 4–8 p.m. collecting donations for cancer research and community support.

Rehabilitation is more than a program or a place. It’s a journey built on hard work, perseverance, support, and hope.

Today, we’re celebrating the HIRO staff who show up every day to support, encourage and walk alongside our clients — helping turn challenges into progress and goals into accomplishments.

And most importantly, we’re celebrating our clients. The people who keep showing up, working toward their goals, trying again, celebrating the small victories, and taking on new challenges every day.

Every step forward matters.
Every victory counts.
And every journey is worth celebrating.

Happy Rehabilitation Day!

HIRO clients explored the wonders of space during an exciting visit from the Hamilton Amateur Astronomers.

From learning about the planets in our solar system to discovering how meteorites are formed, clients were taken on an adventure beyond Earth. The session included fascinating facts about each planet, a look at constellations in the night sky, and an interactive demonstration of how long it takes planets to travel around the sun.

The presentation sparked curiosity, encouraged conversation, and gave clients the opportunity to discover something new together.

A huge thank you to the Hamilton Amateur Astronomers for bringing the universe a little closer and creating such a memorable experience for our clients!

20 years of care. 20 years of making a difference.

We celebrate the 20th anniversary of our Elmhurst service—a milestone that reflects the people who have shaped its story over the past two decades.

We celebrate the clients who have called it home, the families/friends who have walked alongside them, and the dedicated staff whose compassion and commitment have made a lasting difference. Together, they have built a place of belonging where people living with acquired brain injury are supported to achieve goals that are meaningful to them.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating this special occasion, and to the families, neighbours and staff whose presence made the day so memorable.

Here's to many more milestones still to come - Happy 20th Anniversary, Elmhurst!

Group Services recently launched "My Story," a new program that gives clients the chance to share their rehabilitation journey - the challenges they've faced, the progress they've made, and the lessons they've learned along the way.

Nick’s ABI affected his vision, hearing, movement, eating, and ability to communicate. While recovering in hospital after his injury, he worked with his care team to develop an individualized communication "alphabet" using gestures and sounds. Over the past two years at HIRO, he has continued strengthening his communication skills, allowing him to express himself, build connections, and make meaningful progress towards his rehabilitation goals.

During his presentation, Nick showed the group how he communicates, taught everyone some of his signs, and talked about the everyday challenges he faces and the strategies that help him succeed.

His story is a powerful reminder that rehabilitation looks different for everyone, and that finding your voice is an important step toward independence.

Thank you, Nick, for your courage, openness, and willingness to inspire others.

HIRO welcomed Hamilton Police Service for a presentation on street safety, scam awareness, and online safety. For individuals living with an acquired brain injury, having practical strategies to recognize potential risks, protect personal information, and know where to turn for help can support greater confidence and independence in everyday life.

The visit ended with a tour of a police cruiser, where clients explored the vehicle and even got to turn on the lights and sirens!

A heartfelt thank you to PC Bharaj and PC Clarke for sharing their time, knowledge, and commitment to helping our clients feel safer and more empowered in their communities.

HIRO clients participated in a self-care day focused on confidence, wellness, and connection

A heartfelt thank you to the talented students from Marca College of Hair and Esthetics who generously volunteered their time and skills to provide haircuts and styling services. Their kindness and professionalism helped our clients look and feel their best.

Afterwards, clients joined a group discussion led by our clinical team to explore the importance of self-care and practical strategies they can incorporate into their daily routines.

By building confidence and encouraging healthy habits, events like these play an important role in supporting clients through their rehabilitation journey.

As Brain Injury Awareness Month comes to a close, we're looking back on some of the moments that made this month so meaningful.

One of our highlights was cheering on our incredible clients as they participated in the HBIA Run for Survivors, taking on both the 1K and 5K events. Every step was a celebration of resilience, determination, and the progress they continue to make.

Congratulations to everyone who participated and thank you to Hamilton Brain Injury Association and all the volunteers, supporters, and organizers who made this inspiring event possible.

Brain injury changes lives, but it does not define them. Behind every injury is a person with a story worth sharing.

Stace's journey after acquired brain injury is a powerful reminder that progress is possible. From rebuilding his independence to celebrating five years of sobriety, his story highlights the impact of perseverance, support, and community.

Thank you, Stace, for sharing your story and inspiring others along the way.

As we continue to recognize Brain Injury Awareness Month, we're celebrating the power of sharing our stories, staying connected, and finding opportunities to thrive.

During National Accessibility Week, HIRO had the pleasure of welcoming guest speaker Marilyn Abbs through the Ontario Para Network. Their commitment to adaptive sports and inclusive communities highlights the important role recreation and participation can play after brain injury.

Marilyn shared her story and inspired meaningful conversations about resilience, advocacy, and using your voice. Clients connected deeply with her message, sharing their own experiences and exploring ways they can advocate for themselves and others.

It was a powerful reminder that everyone deserves to be heard, supported, and have opportunities to participate in their communities.

Thank you, Marilyn and ONPARA Sports, for helping to inspire hope and inclusion.

Over 50% of people experiencing homelessness have an acquired brain injury.

Thank you, Dr. Jill Wiwcharuk (Streetdrjill), for highlighting the often-invisible role brain injury can play in housing instability.

These injuries can impact how a person thinks, communicates, regulates emotions, and manages daily life—creating added barriers to finding and keeping housing.

Understanding this connection is an important step toward more effective, compassionate responses in our communities.

June is Brain Injury Awareness Month.

This month, we join individuals, families, caregivers, and organizations across Ontario in raising awareness about brain injury and the impact it can have on everyday life.

Brain injury is often called an "invisible disability" because many of its effects cannot be seen. At HIRO, we see the strength, resilience, and progress of people living with brain injury every day, and we know that with the right supports, recovery and growth are possible.

Throughout June, we'll be sharing stories, information, and resources to help increase understanding and reduce stigma.

Together, we can make brain injury more visible.

💜This June, Brain Injury Awareness flags will be raised at city halls, municipalities, and community locations across Ontario.

You can be part of the movement by flying a virtual flag online!

👉Update your social media profile photo, LinkedIn profile, virtual background, or email signature throughout June to show your support for individuals and families living with brain injury.

Every virtual flag helps increase visibility, spark conversations, and show support for individuals and families living with brain injury.

Download our digital resources and step-by-step instructions to help you update your platforms and “fly the flag” online:

🌍 Happy Earth Day!

Today, we’re celebrating the simple, powerful ways our clients connect with the world around them—whether it’s biking through the community, enjoying nature walks, learning about local plants, or getting their hands in the garden.

Spending time outdoors isn’t just good for the planet—it supports wellbeing, builds confidence, and creates meaningful moments of connection.

Every step outside, every new skill learned, every moment of fresh air… it all counts.

On Sunday, five of our HIRO clients proudly took part in the Niagara Region - Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure.

What started as a personal goal for one client — inspired by her stepmother’s fight against breast cancer — quickly grew into a shared mission. Soon, all her peers wanted to join in, and they completed the 1K walk together!

Each participant worked toward goals like walking the route and raising awareness with handmade posters. The day was full of smiles, teamwork, and support.

We’re so proud of their determination and spirit — and a big shoutout to the amazing staff who supported the group, including those who volunteered their time to cheer them on every step of the way! 💗

This hands-on activity helped clients to:
🔹 Improve their mental focus
🔹 Follow multi-step instructions
🔹 Strengthen fine motor skills

"I do not consider myself a creative person and did not think I would be good at weaving. I'm proud of the piece I created."

Thank you to Rivers & Meadows for guiding this creative and meaningful experience—and to our clients for stepping outside their comfort zones and embracing something new! 💙
