Peace Corps Volunteer Mckenzie has been inspiring creativity and learning on Savaii Island through a collaborative World Map project with her students. Over three weeks, students spent their free time before and after school helping to draw and paint a Pacific-centered world map while learning geography, art, and teamwork in a fun and interactive way. The project sparked curiosity and creating meaningful conversations about the world, cultures, and history beyond their island home.

As part of National Environment Week, four of our incredible Peace Corps Environment Volunteers were invited by our partner, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, to serve as panelists for a session on enhancing community resilience. Isabella, Nyah, Gus, and Marc presented on the innovative ways they are working with local communities to deepen environmental resilience and implement sustainable, community-identified conservation priorities.

Each Volunteer shared actionable and replicable ways to effectively promote community ownership and long‑term sustainability at the community level. Congratulations to each of the panelists!

In the western corner of the island of Savai’i, Environment Volunteer Jeremiah and his community are taking community gardening to a new level! Due to poor soil quality and the village's isolated location, growing vegetables has always been a challenge for the community. Through innovation and partnership with local youth and community members, Jeremiah helped to initiate a hydroponics project as a sustainable way to grow fresh vegetables locally. This successful initiative is a wonderful example of the power of community collaboration, resilience, and sustainable development.

In early 2024, PCV Elizabeth Helm received the invitation to serve in Samoa. As she researched her Peace Corps assignment, Elizabeth read the deeply personal memoir, “My View from the House by the Sea,” written by Donna Marie Barr. At the age of fifty-seven, in 2007, Donna served in Samoa as a Peace Corps Volunteer and documented the life-changing stories that led her to fall in love with Samoa and its people. Through Donna’s words, Elizabeth fell in love with Samoa before setting foot in the country.

That was two years ago. Now Elizabeth has completed nearly two years of service, and she and Donna meet up whenever they can during Donna’s regular visits to see her host family in Samoa. Though their experiences and lives are very different, their shared love of Samoa has connected them.

Going Beyond: Celebrating Community Engagement

A third-year Education Volunteer in Savai’i, PCV Annette continues to inspire others through her genuine commitment to community engagement and cultural learning. Embracing the true spirit of service, she actively integrates into village life—working closely with the women’s committee and her host family through meaningful, hands-on activities.

One beautiful highlight of her journey is learning the traditional art of weaving fine mats (ietōga). This cultural practice reflects patience, unity, and deep respect for Samoan heritage. From preparation to the weaving process, Annette is gaining firsthand experience of the values and traditions that make Samoa unique.

General Services Assistant (GSA)
Peace Corps/Samoa is recruiting for a full-time General Services Assistant (GSA). The primary responsibility of the GSA is to provide clerical, general and driving services for the Peace Corps Office. The incumbent will assist the General Services Manager (GSM) with vehicles, inventory, property management and shipping/customs, will provide general clerical services for the office and driving services as needed. The GSA will also receive training and serve as the post’s Back-up IT Specialist (Back-up ITS).

Peace Corps Medical Assistant (MA)
Peace Corps/Samoa is recruiting for a full-time Medical Assistant (MA). This position performs administrative duties in support of the Health Unit. The Medical Assistant works under the guidance of the Peace Corps Medical Officer (PCMO) and reports to the Country Director (CD) for administrative issues.
