SAVAII VIDEO RELEASED!

A successful Awareness Campaign for Savaii Island! We had invited a total of 10 Colleges/Secondary Schools to partake in our event.

We hoped this field trip co-faciliated, coordinated and funded by the Project, had an impact on the students as well as improving learning capacity in Renewable Energy!

Its unfortunate the project will finish soon, but hope other Projects and programmes will continue this initiative.

Please find the video below which highlights what we had done in Savaii Islands. 😊🫡

Successfully delivered the Refresher Training for Energy Efficient Appliance Identification and Controlled Substances. The Project was involved by funding the training.

The decision to fund for this training was due to the need for the project to assist its stakeholders in enforcing EE regulations which controls the importation of inefficient appliances or what they say... avoid Samoa being a rubbish dump for cheap appliances that doesnt meet the Australian and NZ standards.

Who did we train?
The training was primarily for our partners at Ministry of Customs & Revenue Samoa as they are the responsible personnel in assessing imported goods into the country at all borders. However, we had extended invitation to Ministry of Police and Prisons (Law Enforcers), Fire and Emergency Services Agency (hazardous substances) Ministry of Commerce Industry and Labor (Business Regulators) and a few more with relative work around EE.

Why are we pushing for EE appliances?
These are the appliances that uses less electricity. This means, less energy consumption, less expenditures for electricity bills, less GHG emissions from burning fossil fuels that produces electricity, less stress on the energy grid (energy security) and many more.

The training was facilitated by our SAMOA Energy Sector colleagues - Lilian Penaia, Moses Tasesa, Cerella Lei Sam and Leilani Matavao.

CONVENIENT & EFFICIENT

What's it like applying a Data Collecting Tool in the field? KoboToolbox has been very helpful for our Project's field surveys and more. In the past weeks, we have been using the tool for field surveys, QnAs and many more.

Our best use was during our School Awareness Campaign last week. Students were invited to a site visit to selected Renewable Energy sites (Solar, Hydro, Wind) managed by Electric Power Corporation, Samoa and Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Samoa.

Each school was given a tablet, and we had briefed them to work as a group to answer 9 mandatory questions. These questions was to gauge and analyze the currently knowledge capacity of students on Climate Change & Actions, Mitigation goals being contextualized into National targets, as well as Renewable Energy in Samoa developments in place to meet these targets.

The whole idea is for the Project to analyze on what type of assistance they will need in fully understanding Climate Change and concepts related to it especially Mitigation Actions such as Renewable Energy.

What assistance can we look at? Perhaps they will need brochures, posters, resource materials etc. These materials will assist teachers in educating the students in accordance to Curriculum requirements at College levels endorsed by our colleagues at Ministry of Education Sports and Culture Samoa.

Photo shown below are of students currently performing on Pre Assessment (to analyze their knowledge before heading out to the field) and Post (analyzing their knowledge after the field trip) asessments.

The surveys was performed with hopes that the site visits had played a major role in promoting Renewable Energy Developments to the students.

Thank you again Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) for job well done in training Local Ministries in using Kobo Toolbox. We can't wait for Phase 2 of the Training!

HELLO SAVAII ISLAND!

Two weeks ago was School Awareness for Upolu. This week, we've invited 5 schools to join us in the field, fully funded by the Project! This time we've invited our dear friends at SROS to join us.

Alofioata Secondary School
Amoa College
Ituotane Secondary College
Mataevave College
Tuasivi College

We took the students to visit the only Solar Farm in Savaii (300kW) Salelologa, Palauli Hydro (200kW), Diesel Generators (all 3 managed by our friends at EPC) and Saasaai Biogas.

The purpose of this program is to showcase the Renewable Energy and Fossil Fuel based technologies used to generate electricity, and educating the students in the pros and cons of Conventional and Alternative Energies.
As well as promoting our sustainable developments through Mitigation Actions across the Colleges.

We have one more day in the Big Island, 5 more schools, bring it on Friday!

What a day!
