PACIFIC HUMANITARIAN WAREHOUSING PROGRAM GENDER EQUALITY, DISABILITY AND SOCIAL INCLUSION (GEDSI) ACCESSIBILITY AUDIT TRAINING, 28 – 31 JULY 2026, NADI, FIJI

The Pacific Community (SPC) hosted a Pacific Humanitarian Warehousing Program GEDSI Accessibility Audit Training on 28 – 31 July 2026 in Nadi, Fiji to strengthen disaster risk management across the region.

The training equipped participants with practical knowledge and skills to conduct accessibility audits, identify the barriers within humanitarian warehouses and emergency facilities and integrate gender, equality, disability and social inclusion (GEDSI) principles into disaster risk management. The training also provided participants a chance to explore ways to improve accessibility of humanitarian infrastructure, logistics and service delivery to ensure no is left behind during disasters and emergencies. As part of a practical component of the training, participants conducted an accessibility audit of a warehouse to assess infrastructure and operational systems.

The training brought together representatives from National Disaster Management Offices, Infrastructure Departments and Organisations of Persons with Disabilities from across the Pacific to strengthen inclusive disaster preparedness and response systems. Ms. Francine Nelson, Disaster Risk Reduction Officer represented the Disaster Management Office at this crucial training.

⚠️EL NIÑO HAS DEVELOPED IN THE TROPICAL PACIFIC - Outlook for Samoa in the next six (6) months.

The Samoa Meteorology Division has confirmed that El Niño conditions have developed and are expected to influence Samoa over the next six months.

The most likely impacts include:
1. Reduced rainfall across parts of the country leading to:
a) Increased risk of drought, particularly in vulnerable areas;
b) Hotter than normal daytime temperatures;
c) Low water supplies and water storage systems;
d) Reduced agricultural productivity due to dry conditions;
e) Increased risk of heat-related illnesses and vector-borne diseases;
f) Low hydropower generation and energy resources;
g) Increased stress on marine ecosystems, including coral reefs and fisheries;
h) Increased risk of forest and vegetation fires during prolonged dry periods; and

2. High likelihood for Tropical Cyclone (TC) activities to affect Sāmoa
The impacts of El Niño can vary from one region of Sāmoa to another, and not all areas will experience the same conditions.

Recommended Key Actions: conserving water, planning agricultural activities carefully, monitoring health conditions during hot weather, and staying updated with official weather and climate information can make a significant difference in enhancing resilience.

IVA, SAVAI‘I COMPLETES COMMUNITY DISASTER AND CLIMATE RISK MANAGEMENT (CDCRM) PROGRAM (08–11 June 2026).

The community of Iva in Savai'i has successfully completed the implementation of the national Community Disaster and Climate Risk Management (CDCRM) Program, concluding on Thursday 11 June 2026.

The program has significantly enhanced the community’s ability to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to disaster and climate-related risks. Through this initiative community members are now better equipped to safeguard lives, infrastructure, and livelihoods, contributing to stronger local resilience.

This milestone highlights the importance of coordinated efforts between government and partners in strengthening disaster preparedness at the community level.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) through its Disaster Management Office (DMO) extends its sincere appreciation to the CDCRM Committee for their leadership and dedication throughout the program as well as the Samoa Red Cross Society (SRCS) for successfully delivering the program as the implementing agency.

We also acknowledge the European Union for its generous financial support under the Building Safety and Resilience in the Pacific Phase II (BSRPII) Project that has played a vital role in enabling the successful delivery of this initiative.
