Cameras have been rolling in Samoa!

As we approach Pre-COP in the Pacific and COP31 in Türkiye, Australia is supporting the development of a Pacific climate documentary which captures experiences, knowledge and stories from advocates and communities across the Pacific.

The documentary will highlight the Young Climate Negotiators training held in Samoa earlier this year, which brought together young people from across the region to exchange perspectives and strengthen their voices as emerging climate leaders.

Improving the health of our communities through partnership 👩‍⚕️🫶

The longstanding partnership between the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and the Ministry of Health Samoa is helping transform lives in Samoa.

Since 2023, the collaboration has supported more than 200 patient consultations and 150 surgeries, while strengthening the skills and capacity of Samoa's clinical workforce.

Earlier this year, specialist paediatric and urology teams worked alongside local surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses to deliver essential care and improve patient quality of life.

In June, a team of paediatric surgeons performed 28 surgeries on children at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital over the course of a week. In July, a specialist urology team performed 29 surgeries at the same hospital.

Head of ENT, Dr. Sione Pifeleti highlighted the importance of RACS visits saying without the surgeries their quality-of-life would not be as good.

"These procedures provide the best possible outcomes for the children, and their parents are incredibly grateful for the opportunities made possible through this support."

Dr. Steven from the RACS team shared how it has been a privilege to work alongside local staff.

"We have learned a great deal from each other while sharing surgical techniques and solving complex cases together,” he said.

Australia is supporting another two visits from RACS to Samoa in 2027.

Through partnerships like these, Samoa and Australia are improving access to specialist healthcare while building the skills and expertise needed to deliver quality care for years to come.

🌱 In Fasito'o-uta, communities are taking action to strengthen food security, protect the environment, and build resilience to climate change.

Meet Doreen Mauila Ameko from the Mata'itoa Farmers Co-operative Society, one of the local leaders championing agroforestry in Samoa.

By combining traditional crops with tree planting, families are improving livelihoods, increasing biodiversity, and helping safeguard their land for future generations.

Supported by Australia and delivered by UNDP in partnership with the Government of Samoa, this agroforestry initiative is helping 20 families build more productive and climate-resilient farms.

Congratulations to the 62 community organisations across Samoa who have just been awarded a grant under UNDP GEF Small Programme Samoa (SGP)!

These grants are empowering local communities to turn innovative ideas into action for a more resilient and sustainable future.

The $3.12 million investment in community-led environmental action is supported by the Government of Australia in partnership with UNDP and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

Some communities will work to conserve coral reefs, and rehabilitate mangrove wetlands. Others will expand access to solar lighting which can make roads, homes and community spaces safer, while reducing the reliance on diesel-powered generators.

Strengthening agriculture in communities was another strong theme. Projects will support hydroponic vegetable production, poultry farming, school gardens and improved land management.

Congratulations to the Samoa Police officers who recently completed the United Nations Peace Operations Pre-Deployment Training Course alongside their Pacific colleagues.

The officers were part of a group of 54 police officers from Samoa, Kiribati, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Tonga, Tuvalu, Naoero and Papua New Guinea who have now taken the next step towards future UN Peace Operations deployments.

This builds on more than 50 years of our governments, communities, humanitarian responders, defence and police forces working and training together, in the Pacific way.

We are pleased to see the Samoa Tourism Authority has wrapped up its roadshow across Australia, strengthening partnerships, connecting with travel agencies, and showcasing everything Samoa has to offer.

Australia remains Samoa's second largest tourism market, accounting for 23% of visitors, with significant potential for future growth.

Teacher aides play a vital role in children’s success 🌱

The first Teacher Aide Micro Credential Program to address the workforce shortage was launched at the National University of Samoa last week.

The two new micro-credential courses introduced will provide teachers with access to short targeted training that build practical skills and knowledge in:

Teaching and Learning in Inclusive Education

Management, Health and Safety for Teachers Aides

At the launching on Thursday, Minister of Education and Culture, Aiono Prof. Alec Ekeroma spoke about the importance of investing in the education sector.

"As we move forward let us remember that quality education depends not only on policies, infrastructure and resources, but also on the people that serve our children,” said Aiono.

He added this is by recognizing and strengthening the role of teacher aides, “we strengthen our schools, support our teachers, and improve learning outcomes for all."

Australia, through the with the Government of Samoa supported the establishment of the Teacher Aide Micro Credential Program, through stakeholder consultations, accreditation processes, participant enrolment, and the inaugural course delivery.

For 75 years, Australians have volunteered overseas to support locally led development and build lasting connections between our countries.

🌺 In Samoa, Australian Volunteers have been working alongside local partner organisations since 1972. Since then, around 270 volunteer assignments have supported 67 organisations across the country.

One of those volunteers is Krystelle Syme, who completed two assignments in Samoa: first as an Emergency Medical Services Mentor with Samoa Fire and Emergency Services Authority (2017-18), and then as a Paramedic Trainer (2019-21).

Krystelle is one of more than 17,000 Australians who have volunteered overseas since 1951. Her work helped strengthen Samoa's emergency medical response capability. As Tofi Mauala, Commander of the Integrated Emergency Medical Response Development at SFESA, explains:

💭 "Krystelle helped develop technical training, clinical protocols and mentoring systems that continue to support our emergency medical services today."

Reflecting on her time in Samoa, Krystelle says:

💭 "The value of community is one thing I have really learnt and taken away with me. Samoa showed me the strength and resilience of community and what it means to feel included."

🌱A significant milestone was celebrated in Etemuli, Lotofaga last Friday with the launch of the Sustainable Farming and Compost Hub for the Sosaiete Felagolagomai Tutufaatasi.

The event also marked the group's 10th anniversary, celebrating a decade of community growth, resilience, and sustainability.

Funded through the , the initiative provides equipment and tools that transform coconut husks into compost for local florists and gardeners, creating economic opportunities while reducing waste.

High Commissioner Will Robinson congratulated the group, project lead Masi Levi, and community members for their dedication and leadership in empowering the village.

This project is a great example of what can be achieved when communities come together, work collaboratively, and build strong partnerships.

🌺 It was a pleasure to welcome First Nations BighART group to the Australian High Commission in Apia this week.

The BighART team is led by Gammee-Dharawal cultural leader Jacob Morris alongside emerging artists and his nephews, Raidyn McLeod and Charlie Braddick and producer Fallon Te Paa.

The team met and connected with local educators, young people and communities to share traditions that highlight the importance of identity, language and culture.
