The Fisheries Division has successfully completed a Trochus Shell Polishing Workshop aimed at empowering local artisans with new skills and knowledge in creating beautiful handicrafts from trochus shells.

Held from 26โ€“29 May, the workshop was facilitated by the Fisheries Division with valuable support from Marie Ilse, a crafting expert from New Zealand. Participants were given hands-on training to enhance their craftsmanship and explore new opportunities in shell-based product development.

This initiative is part of the ACIAR-funded project, โ€œTowards More Profitable and Sustainable Mabรฉ Pearl and Shell-Based Livelihoods in the Western Pacific.โ€ The project focuses not only on strengthening the skills of local artisans, but also on developing markets for shell products so that local businesses and communities can benefit economically and sustainably.

A big faโ€™afetai to all participants and partners who contributed to the success of the workshop. The journey continues as the next training heads to Savaiโ€™i Island and we look forward to seeing the creativity and talent that our Savaiian artisans will bring to the table.

POST-HARVEST FISHERIES TRAINING SUCCESSFULLY CONCLUDED

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF), through the Fisheries Division, successfully concluded the Five-Day Post-Harvest Fisheries Training held from 25โ€“29 May 2026 in Apia.

The training was officially closed today by the Hon. Associate Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries and brought together fish vendors, particularly women and youth as well as Fisheries Division staff. Participants gained practical skills in food safety, fish handling, tuna bottling, smoking, packaging, labelling and value-adding of fisheries products.

MAF sincerely acknowledges the generous support of the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) for funding this important initiative and extends special appreciation to Ms. Sera Vaniqi of Fiji for sharing her expertise and practical knowledge throughout the training.

The Ministry also commends all participants for their commitment and active participation. The knowledge and skills gained will contribute to improved food safety, enhanced fisheries products and increased income-generating opportunities for fish vendors and their families.

As part of the programme, fisheries processing equipment funded by the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) was officially handed over to the Fish Vendors Association through its President. The equipment will support participants in applying the skills and knowledge gained during the training and assist the Association in establishing and expanding value-added fisheries products and income-generating activities.

Empowering fish vendors, strengthening livelihoods and adding value to Samoaโ€™s fisheries resources.

The Terminal Review of the Agriculture and Fisheries Sector Plan (AFSP) (2022/2023 - 2026/2027) is now underway, beginning with internal consultations before progressing to one-on-one engagements and wider stakeholdersโ€™ consultations. This important process provides an opportunity to reflect on our achievements, identify lessons learned, and help shape the future direction of Samoa's agriculture and fisheries sector.

We sincerely acknowledge and appreciate International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) invaluable support, which made this review process possible through our partnership. Together, we continue to strengthen collaboration and commitment towards a more resilient and sustainable sector for our people and communities.

Pacific Tuna Initiative expands to include Palau, Advancing Sustainable, Equitable Ocean Governance.

Conservation International announced the expansion of its Pacific Tuna Initiative to Palau, marking the launch of its third phase to improve the sustainability and governance of South Pacific albacore tuna fisheries.
The initiative brings together governments, industry, and communities across the Pacific to strengthen fisheries management, align policy and market incentives, and support long-term ocean resilience.
This third phase builds on progress in Fiji, Samoa, and New Caledonia to include Palau, and focuses on scaling jurisdictional approaches to fisheries reform, advancing market and financial innovations, and strengthening regional cooperation to improve environmental and social outcomes across the tuna sector.
A regional meeting held in Apia, beginning today, convened representatives from Fiji, Palau, New Caledonia, and Samoa to discuss pathways to support more sustainable ocean production and improve fisheries governance across the region.
Leausalilo Leilani Duffy, Conservation International Samoa Technical Director, said: "Samoa is honoured to host this regional meeting of the Pacific Tuna Initiative, bringing together government, industry, and community partners from across the Pacific.
South Pacific albacore tuna is a vital shared resource that supports Pacific economies, food systems, and cultural identity. Through this initiative, we are working together to strengthen fisheries management, connect sustainable practices to markets, and improve outcomes for communities and marine ecosystems.
This is about Pacific leadership in building a fisheries system that is both sustainable and fair for current and future generations.โ€
Supported by a grant from the Walmart Foundation, the Pacific Tuna Initiative is focused on improved fisheries management, expanded marine protection, and strengthened collaboration between governments, industry, and civil society.
By linking national efforts with regional governance and global seafood markets, the initiative aims to support Pacific Island nations in advancing more sustainable and equitable tuna fisheries.

Key Priorities include:
โ€ข Market Transformation and Financial Innovation for South Pacific Albacore: Creating new market incentives and investment pathways that support sustainability and socially responsible tuna production.
โ€ข Regional Policy Alignment and Collective Action on Governance and Human Rights Reforms: Supporting adoption and implementation of regional standards on electronic monitoring, labour standards, and Illegal, Unregulated, and Unreported (IUU) fishing countermeasures.
โ€ข Scaling Jurisdictional Initiatives: Expanding successful models from Fiji and Samoa into Palau, to support broader improvements across fisheries systems.
โ€ข Revitalization of coastal ecosystems: Integrating community-led coastal fisheries management to boost climate resilience, biodiversity protection, food security, and economic livelihoods.
โ€ข Improved ocean protection and regional collaboration: Supporting marine protected areas and advancing regional collaboration towards 30% protection and 100% sustainable management by 2030.
Duffy added โ€œThis strongly complements Samoaโ€™s Marine Spatial Plan, which is grounded in Faโ€™asamoa, community leadership, traditional knowledge, and science.
Samoa is committed to protecting 30 percent of our ocean while sustainably managing 100 percent of our marine space for future generations. This initiative strengthens fisheries management, marine protection, food security, and climate resilience together โ€” and reflects Pacific leadership in action.โ€
