Samoa National Youth Council - SNYC

Samoa National Youth Council - SNYC Mobilizing Youth for Youth.

History

The re-establishment of the Samoa National Youth Council was a project led by The Ministry of Women Community and Social Development through the Division for Youth. The project was informed by a Preliminary Scoping Study that was conducted in 2009 and funded by AusAID‟s Pacific Leadership Program. The establishment interim phase then started in March 2011 with further support from PLP, an

d overlooked by the Ministry’s TALAVOU Programme Steering Committee and the Samoa National Youth Advisory Committee. The Ministry’s goal in re-establishing Samoa’s National Youth Council is to mobilize responsible youth citizenship to lead and help with the implementation of youth development projects and programs. It was envisioned that this would also form a national platform coordinating the voice and concerns of young people, in contributing to Samoa’s development policies.

Some of our Board Members together with our Chair paid a courtesy visit to the Honorable Minister of Women, Community & Social Development, Afioga Moefa’auouo Julius Tafuna’i last week. This has been a practice of the Council’s Board in the past and was a necessary move especially at the start the year as the Council lays down its annual activities for the year ahead whilst also wrapping up most of its activities from the last financial year.

We anticipate a year where we will see continuation of our work in mobilizing the youth of Samoa for development.

We wish the Minister and his office all the best and looking forward to working together.

This is why we try to spotlight Climate Change as a key area of focus for young people as we are the custodians of our lands and god-given resources.

More climate action in the pipeline for this year!

The country of Tuvalu has officially been lost to climate change.

Experts say other countries will soon follow.

The Pacific nation of Tuvalu is facing a literal disappearance, with climate projections suggesting the entire island chain will be submerged by 2050, forcing the total evacuation of its physical island

To address this existential crisis, the government has enacted the Falepili Union Treaty with Australia, creating the world’s first planned climate migration program. This landmark agreement provides 280 Tuvaluans annually with permanent residency in Australia, offering essential access to healthcare, education, and employment. The urgency is undeniable: when the first 'climate visa' ballot opened this July, over 8,750 people applied for just 280 slots, illustrating the desperate race to escape the encroaching tides.

In a revolutionary move to preserve its sovereignty, Tuvalu is also reinventing itself as the world’s first digital nation. The project involves 3D-scanning its islands, digitizing government operations, and amending the national constitution to define the country as a virtual state. This transition comes as NASA warns that global sea-level rise has doubled its pace since 1993, with regions like the Gulf of Mexico rising three times faster than the global average. As Tuvalu prepares to exist solely in the cloud, it serves as a stark 'canary in the coal mine' for coastal regions worldwide, signaling a future where geography may no longer define a nation's existence.
