World Metrology Day 2026
_______________________________

The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Labour (MCIL) commemorated the second annual World Metrology Day on May 20th 2026, at Lava Hotel. This yearโ€™s theme is, โ€œMetrology - Building Trust in Policy Making,โ€ highlights the crucial role that accurate measurement and reliable data play in fostering transparency, safety and economic development across the nation. The event brought together government ministries, private sector partners, businesses and community stakeholders to emphasise the importance of metrology; the science of measurement in everyday life. Accurate measurements underpin fair trade, consumer safety, environmental monitoring, healthcare and technological innovation. When measurements are trustworthy and policies are based on sound data, confidence among citizens and international partners is strengthened, contributing to Samoaโ€™s continued growth and development.

The celebration featured presentations from various government agencies, including MCIL, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Works, Transport and Infrastructure, and the Samoa Fire and Emergency Authority. These presentations promoted the objectives and activities of their respective organizations in relation to metrology and highlighted the collaborative efforts with the Petroleum Taskforce Committee which enforces the Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) standards for all petrol stations and oversees the petroleum distribution across the country. The event also included information booths and promotional materials to further engaged attendees and provided a deeper understanding of metrologyโ€™s vital role in everyday life. Additionally, the Ministry scheduled other awareness programs that will be conducted in Savaii on the 21st of May at Stevenson Manase and Sapini โ€“ Faga on the 22nd of May 2026 to further commemorate the World Metrology Day for this year.

This important event is organised by the Fair Trading, Codex Alimentarius, Consumer Protection and Metrology Division of the Ministry, with support from various partner agencies. The celebration seeks to foster inter-agency collaboration, strengthen regulatory activities and enhance public awareness of the significance of accurate measurements. It serves as a reminder that precise measurement is fundamental to protecting consumers, ensuring fair trade and supporting Samoaโ€™s broader development objectives.

Delivering the keynote remarks on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer, Afioga Houlton Faasau, MCILโ€™s Assistant Chief Executive Officer, emphasised that metrology forms the backbone of trade, industry and innovation in Samoa. He reaffirmed the governmentโ€™s commitment to building trust through precise measurements and trustworthy policies that will support the nationโ€™s growth and prosperity. The celebration of World Metrology Day underscores the nationโ€™s dedication to advancing standards, ensuring safety and promoting transparency for the benefit of all its citizens.

The Minister for the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Labour, Hon. Fata Ryan Schuster, accompanied by the Chief Executive Officer, Afioga Fepuleai Roger Toleafoa, was participating in the inaugural Pacific Senior Labour Officials Meeting and Labour Ministers Meeting (LMM) in Nadi, Fiji, from May 11-13, 2026.

Representing Samoa, the delegation joined counterparts from across the Pacific to operationalize a regional labour governance framework designed to strengthen employment cooperation under the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.

The forum, hosted by Fiji, focuses on the theme โ€œDesigning our Destiny: A Just and Resilient Future of Work for the Blue Pacificโ€. Key issues addressed by Minister Fata and CEO Toleafoa include:

โ€ข Labour Mobility & Skill Development: Enhancing frameworks to benefit Samoan workers and address regional workforce shortages.
โ€ข Occupational Health & Safety: Standardizing safety practices and protecting worker welfare across the Pacific region.
โ€ข Climate Change and Workforces: Developing proactive policies to build economic resilience for workers against climate disruptions.

โ€œThis meeting marks a vital step in transforming Pacific labour standards,โ€ said CEO Fepuleai Roger Toleafoa. โ€œMCIL is dedicated to ensuring Samoaโ€™s labour policies are not only robust but also aligned with regional and international standards to promote fair work and economic growth.โ€

As the secretariat and chair to Samoaโ€™s own Tripartite Forum, the Ministry is actively engaging with labour officials, workersโ€™ representatives, and employersโ€™ organizations to advance regional tripartite dialogue, ensuring inclusive policy development.

The outcomes of this conference will directly support the development of a coordinated regional position on employment and labour issues, contributing to the Pacific Islands Forum architecture.
