NEW ZEALAND CUSTOMS MINISTER VISITS SAMOA TO ADVANCE REGIONAL BORDER SECURITY COOPERATION
Apia, Samoa | 18 May 2026
The Government of Samoa welcomed the official visit of New Zealand’s Minister of Customs, the Honourable Casey Costello, from 17 to 19 May 2026, as part of ongoing regional engagement to strengthen cooperation in combating transnational serious and organised crime across the Pacific.
During her visit, the Honourable Casey Costello toured the Apia Port, where she was briefed on Samoa’s customs and border management operations, including measures aimed at strengthening border security and preventing the movement of illicit goods and drugs into Samoa and the wider Pacific region.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Customs, together with representatives from the Samoa Ports Authority, provided insights into current operational procedures, enforcement efforts, and collaborative initiatives that support regional security and trade facilitation.
The visit also served as an opportunity to further reinforce the longstanding partnership between Samoa and New Zealand, particularly in areas relating to customs cooperation, information sharing, and regional law enforcement coordination.
Following the port visit, Minister Costello met with Samoa’s Minister of Customs, the Honourable Masinalupe Leatuavao Makesi Pisi, to discuss shared priorities and continued collaboration in addressing emerging border security challenges facing the Pacific region.
The Government of Samoa acknowledges the valued support and partnership of the Government of New Zealand in promoting safer borders and strengthening regional cooperation.
