The Virgin Islands Department of Public Works(DPW) is proud to announce the winners of the 2026 DPW Art Competition! This year, we received more than 20 submissions from talented students across the territory. Centered around the theme “If I Worked for Public Works...,” each artwork reflected the students’ imagination, artistic talent, and unique perspectives on the important role public works plays in our communities while celebrating the beauty and spirit of the Virgin Islands.

Winners from each district and grade group were awarded a $100 cash prize for their outstanding submissions.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) advises the public of continued road striping activities along a segment of Weymouth Rhymer Highway in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Weather permitting, the work is expected to be completed by the end of today, Wednesday, June 10, 2026.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) advises the public of road repairs throughout downtown Frederiksted on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.

This week, DPW contractor – Marco St. Croix, Inc. – mobilized operations in downtown Frederiksted, marking the start of a comprehensive roadway improvement project in the area. The project, funded through the 2015 GARVEE Issuance, includes the milling, paving, and striping of Strand Street, King Street, Queen Street, and Fisher Street. Additional improvements will include the cleaning and clearing of drainage structures, trench drain repairs, manhole and valve adjustments, utility cover replacements, and the installation of new roadway signage. As part of the project, the Pond Bridge on King Street will be replaced with a new steel bridge designed to accommodate two vehicular travel lanes and an eight-foot-wide pedestrian sidewalk.

Motorists should anticipate temporary lane restrictions, intermittent road closures, and traffic delays throughout the duration of the project. The public is encouraged to use alternate routes whenever possible and to exercise caution when traveling through active work zones.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) advises the public of upcoming road repairs along a portion of Benburin “Benny” Stephens Drive in the Bovoni area of St. Thomas, U.S Virgin Islands. Work will resume on Monday, June 8, and Tuesday, June 9, 2026, as the contractor completes the final phase of repairs in the area.

DPW contractor – Grace Civil LLC -- has previously completed several segments of the Bovoni roadway and will return to the area adjacent to the Puma Gas Station to complete the remaining section of the project. To minimize disruptions for motorists and residents, construction activities will take place overnight from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. each day.

Motorists should expect delays, exercise caution, obey all traffic control devices, and follow directions from flaggers and construction personnel. Residents and commuters are encouraged to plan accordingly and allow additional travel time.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) informs the public of the upcoming Post Office Beautification Project in the Historic Downtown Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

DPW contractor -- Island Designs LLC -- will mobilize on-site beginning Monday, June 8, 2026, with a temporary refrigerated container (re**er) that will be stored on the eastern side of Emancipation Garden for the delivery and offloading of project materials. The re**er is expected to remain on-site through Wednesday, June 10, 2026. Landscaping activities will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and the project is scheduled to be completed by August 2026.

The Post Office Beautification Project is part of the Department’s ongoing efforts to enhance the appearance of public spaces and create a more welcoming and aesthetically pleasing environment for residents and visitors.

The Virgin Islands Department of Public Works (DPW) advises the public of a temporary road closure along Melvin Evans Highway in St. Croix, from the Industrial Park Intersection to the Diageo Intersection, due to asphalt rehabilitation work at the East Airport Intersection.

DPW contractor – Marco St. Croix, Inc. -- has completed paving operations in both the westbound and eastbound lanes. As the final phase of the project, roadway striping operations are scheduled for Sunday, June 07, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Motorists are strongly encouraged to avoid the area and follow posted detour signage. Please refer to the provided map for guidance on alternate routes.

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS – The Virgin Islands Department of Public Works (DPW) is advising motorists of upcoming roadway striping operations at the recently rehabilitated East Airport Intersection along Melvin Evans Highway on St. Croix.

Earlier this month, DPW contractor Marco St. Croix completed asphalt rehabilitation and resurfacing work at the intersection, significantly improving roadway conditions and overall traffic flow. Due to unforeseen construction challenges encountered during the project, final pavement striping and installation of directional turning lane markings could not be completed at that time.

The contractor is now scheduled to complete the remaining striping work this weekend. Staging activities are expected to begin on Saturday, with active striping operations scheduled for Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The final striping will establish permanent lane assignments, directional turn lanes, and pavement markings necessary to maximize the safety and operational efficiency of the intersection.

Motorists should anticipate temporary lane closures, traffic control measures, and delays while work is underway. Traffic congestion is expected during active striping operations, particularly during periods of heavier travel. The traveling public is strongly encouraged to avoid the area if possible and utilize alternate routes.

“The Department understands that roadway work can be inconvenient, particularly along one of St. Croix’s busiest corridors,” said DPW Commissioner Derek Gabriel. “However, these final striping improvements are critical to ensuring motorists can safely and efficiently navigate the intersection. We appreciate the public’s patience as we complete the final phase of this project.”

Commissioner Gabriel also urged motorists to exercise caution when traveling through the area.

“We are asking drivers to slow down, remain alert, and follow all traffic control devices and directions from work crews,” Gabriel said. “The safety of both the traveling public and the workers on site remains our highest priority.”

The Department appreciates the community’s cooperation and patience as it continues to deliver critical roadway improvements across St. Croix and throughout the territory.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) advises the community of a temporary road closure on Melvin Evans Highway between the Sunny Isle and Home Depot intersections to allow for median maintenance.

The westbound lane will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, June 3, 2026, followed by the eastbound lane on Thursday, June 4, 2026. Closures will be in effect from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on both days.

Motorists are urged to use alternate routes and follow posted detours during this time.
