🔥 LOCAL BURN BAN LIFTED AT 5 P.M. TODAY — FRIDAY, MAY 1, 2026

The Watauga County Fire Marshal's Office and the Town of Boone Fire Department are removing the local ban on outdoor burning effective 5 p.m. today.

⚠️ IMPORTANT — read the fine print:

✅ Applies ONLY to small fires (burn pits, grills, etc.) within 100 feet of a dwelling
❌ Burning of brush or yard debris is NOT allowed under Town of Boone ordinance
❌ The North Carolina Forest Service statewide burn ban is STILL in effect
❌ All open burning permits remain cancelled
❌ No burning of any kind beyond 100 feet from a residence

Fire officials say recent green-up and tree canopy growth has lowered outdoor fire danger — but extreme caution is still required. If you plan a recreational fire:

• Keep it contained at all times
• Have a water hose nearby
• Stay with the fire until it is fully extinguished
• Watch the weather

🚨 STATEWIDE BURN BAN — ALL 100 NORTH CAROLINA COUNTIES
Effective 6 PM Saturday, March 28 — Until Further Notice

The NC Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning statewide and has canceled all previously issued burning permits, effective 6 p.m. today.

This means Watauga, Ashe, and Avery counties are all under the ban.

🚫 What is prohibited:
• All open burning — leaves, branches, yard debris
• Campfires
• Fireworks and pyrotechnic devices
• Any previously issued burn permits are now canceled

✅ What is still allowed:
• Grills and barbecues (unless local ordinances prohibit)
• Fire pits and outdoor fireplaces WITHIN 100 feet of an occupied dwelling (subject to local fire marshal authority)

⚠️ Violations: $100 fine + $183 court costs. Anyone who starts a fire may also be liable for the cost of suppression.

Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler cited drought conditions, forecasted fire weather, and limited rainfall as the reasons for the statewide action.

Call 911 to report a wildfire or anyone intentionally starting a fire.

Zionville Fire and NC Forestry were alerted to a fire in the 3000 block of NC Hwy 88 on March 21, 2026, at 12:26 PM. En route, units were informed that the fire was nearing a barn. Upon arrival, Zionville Fire discovered a controlled burn had escaped and was threatening the adjacent barn, which was beginning to catch fire. The incident was upgraded to a structure fire response, and additional units were dispatched to provide assistance. The fire was brought under control at 13:01.

As the community faces drying conditions, Zionville Fire encourages residents to use caution with outdoor burning and to contact 911 if a fire escapes; do not try to fight the fire yourself.

Stay safe!
