Last night, Kiwanis Club of Zion Benton hosted our fourth annual achievement awards at Zion-Benton Township High School honoring students in the Career and Tech Ed Dept.

$10,400 of scholarships donated 100% by our community were handed out to students along with over $4,000 worth of swag bags. These swag bags included tools specific to the trade the students were awarded in. Cash awards ranged from $25 - $300 with the student of the year being awarded a $2,000 scholarship.

Our program started out as a way to award students going into the trades with scholarships since there are few scholarship resources available to them and quickly grew into honoring the entire career and tech ed department by year two.

The best part about this program is that our Kiwanis Club organizes it. but the program is funded through a grassroots effort of our entire community. Donations ranged from $5 - $1,500 with donations coming from large corporations, small businesses, retired and current teachers and administrators, and community members.

We are already collecting for next year's awards. Please visit our app if you would like to contribute to our 2027 awards. It is such an honor for our club to organize these awards for our community that makes these awards possible. It really does take a village

The trades are the backbone of our country. Three years ago, we started an awards ceremony specifically to reward students at Zion-Benton Township High School in trades classes – an area of education greatly underserved in scholarships. Since then, the program expanded to cover all classes in the Career and Tech Ed Department at ZBTHS.

Partnering with local businesses, individuals, and community service groups has allowed our achievement awards to be a great success for the students of Zion-Benton Township High School. Over three years, our community has provided over $35,000 in awards to students enrolled in career, industry, and trades classes at ZBTHS. Some of these winners use the money and gifts to help fund college, trade school, or other education tuition. Some of the winners have started businesses or learned skills needed to start a career in their trade.

The best place to be at the start of our ceremony is in the lobby. You will see families coming in to support their students. Dads rushing in fresh from trades jobs who had no time to change. Moms taking pictures, teary-eyed, thankful for the only award their child has ever received. For many of the honorees, it is their first time being appreciated, and it is a wonderful moment to witness.

We need help in three ways:

1. Cash Donors: Our community funds this amazing program. This program gives out $10,100 in cash awards and trade-specific gifts to students. If we do not fund that amount, we have to reduce the award value which will impact opportunities for the winners.

2. Attend Our Ceremony: These kids need to know their community supports them. When we recognize donors in attendance, it is awesome to see the appreciation on the faces of parents, students, and guests. Parents have asked us for copies of the program after the event because they want to make sure they support the businesses that believed in their kids and gave a little hope.

3. Swag Bag Sponsors: For $150 your business can sponsor a swag bag for a certain class. Example: if you own an electrical company, you may sponsor the swag bag for the electricity class. Tip: there are only two swag bags per Level 2 class. Please donate early if there is a specific swag bag you would like to sponsor. Level 2 classes are underlined on the included list.

Included is more information on the program. Please reach out to a member of our committee for further information. Thank you for considering partnering with us on the amazing opportunity to help some students continue their dreams and to help others to start theirs.

Thank you for believing in our students.
