Zimmerman/Livonia Fire District

Zimmerman/Livonia Fire District The ZLFD proudly serves Zimmerman, Livonia Township, and several surrounding communities. Fire prevention is a large part of the Fire Department.

The Zimmerman Fire Department was renamed Zimmerman/Livonia Fire District in 2004, when the City of Zimmerman and Livonia Township formed a joint operating fire board. The Fire Department covers 78 square miles of service area which includes all of the City of Zimmerman, Livonia Township, and portions of Orrock Township, Blue Hill Township, and Stanford Township. The population served by the Depar

tment is approximately 12,000 citizens. A full range of services are offered to the community including fire suppression, rescue, and radiation decontamination for the nuclear power plant in Monticello. Our firefighters and fire prevention specialist visit schools and host in-house activities throughout the year. During Fire Prevention week every October, our fire department visits elementary schools and pre-schools with our safe escape house. The Fire District hired the Department's first full-time Fire Chief in 2008. The Fire Chief manages the Fire Department and has a staff of over 30 on-call firefighters that hold full-time jobs outside of the Fire Department. The firefighters are on-call 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. These highly trained firefighters provide a quality service to the citizens in our community.

Last night, members of the ZLFD learned all about electric vehicles. These vehicles are becoming more and more popular and pose a unique risk to responders.

While they are not dependent of fossil fuels, their electrical system poses a significant risk to firefighters during extrications. Large batteries not only hold a significant charge but subject to thermal run away posing a unique fire suppression hazard.

Deadly fires in Minnesota are on the rise! Please take steps to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Nearly three dozen Minnesotans have already died in fires this year, and it’s only May.

They were mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, friends and so much more.

Take steps today to protect yourself and your loved ones:
• Test and check the batteries in your smoke alarms.
• Create and practice a fire escape plan for your household.
• Keep the exits in your home clear.
• Never leave cooking, candles, smoking materials or other sources of fire unattended.

These small steps can save lives. Don’t wait until a tragedy strikes close to home to take action.

Congratulations and good luck to the ZHS class of 2026!

As Memorial Day approaches, we reflect and remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.

Before the cookouts, sales, and fun filled holiday weekend, we encourage all to remember the meaning of this sacred holiday.

To those actively serving we thank you. To those who are buried in places like Fort Snelling or in the rolling hills of Arlington, we remember you and will forever be thankful for your sacrifice.

Wishing you all a safe Memorial Day and Memorial Day weekend!

This video from our brothers and sisters at Bloomington Fire Department shows just how fast fire spread occurs and conditions deteriorate. No injuries were reported and all pets made it.

Note that no smoke detectors sounded… working smoke detectors serve as early warning and save lives!

It’s Mothers Day! We want to wish a very special mother’s days to our own members who are both mothers and firefighters!

Not only do these ladies respond to needs at home, they bunker up and respond when their community needs them.

To them and all the mothers out there, Happy Mother’s Day!
