Spring is finally here (well, we thinks so), so now is a good time to discuss e-bikes and the rules that pertain to them.

Here is PennDot's definition of an e-Bike:
- It must weigh under 100 lbs
- 20 mph maximum on motor power alone on a level surface
- Have a motor under 750 watts
- Has operable pedals

In order to legally operate an e-bike in PA, you MUST be at least 16 years old, however an actual license is not required nor are helmets (although we highly recommend wearing helmets!). Registration and insurance is not required either.

According to PA Law, e-bikes and pedal bikes are not permitted to be ridden on sidewalks in a Business District. Here in the borough, that means no bikes or e-bikes on the sidewalks on Main Street, the east side of Clay Street and the west side of High Street. Zelienople borough code also applies this restriction to in-line skates, scooters, and skateboards and extends the restrictions to borough owned parking lots.

Where use of skateboards, bicycles, in-line skates and scooters or other like instrument is permissible, the operator shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian, motor vehicle, or other user of said sidewalk, street, or parking lot.

What about electric dirt bikes? They are not legally an e-bike because they don't have any pedals, have maximum speeds of more than 20mph, and do not have any street legal equipment (mirrors, turn signals, etc.). Electric dirt bikes are considered off-road vehicles that are only to be operated on private property. They cannot be operated on public roads and sidewalks.

Please ride safe! We always suggest wearing a helmet when you ride any kind of bike, motorized or not. 🚲
