Scammers are back it. The photograph attached has been received via text by several members of the community. It is fraudulent, as courts do not conduct business by text. The QR code is an attempt to get unsuspecting citizens to link to a website to solicit payment or potentially use malware to gather personal information. We suggest deleting the text and blocking the number.

Investigators travelled to Young Harris , Georgia in reference to a stalking case involving two victims that reside in Pike County. The victims had received numerous phone calls and explicit text messages from an unknown person over an extended period of time. The offender , Matthew Corr, 30 years of age, had used various texting apps to disguise the origination of the phone calls and text messages.

Corr appeared to have knowledge of the victims daily routines and would make comments about “seeing them soon”. Concerned for their safety a report was filed with law enforcement to identify the individual responsible. Corr was identified after numerous subpoenas were served on the texting apps companies.

Corr was also identified as an IT employee for Young Harris College. Upon being interviewed by investigators he confessed to obtaining information on people he wanted to contact through the computers at his place of employment. He also admitted to sending numerous messages, not only to the victims from Pike County but several others in the Young Harris area. He was brought back to Pike County and faces two counts of stalking. There is additional charges being filed for stalking offenses at Young Harris.

Pike County Sheriff’s Office investigators have made an arrest after a late night theft was reported at Yancey Engineered Solutions. Employees discovered a large amount of copper wire had been taken while the business was closed. Video footage from the business showed a rental truck on the property while an individual used lift equipment to load spools of wire onto the truck. The items taken by the thieves was reported to be in excess of $300,000.

After identifying the vehicle, investigators were able to track the movements of the vehicle to a general area within Clayton County. On Thursday afternoon investigators located the rental truck traveling on Tara Road, and with assistance from the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office a traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle. Three individuals were detained to determine their involvement in the theft and transported to Pike County.

Evidence located through the investigation showed that the stolen copper had been sold to a recycling business for the sum of $40,000.

Deron Gates, 36 years of age , from Jonesboro, has been charged with Felony Theft by taking and is currently in the Pike County Jail. The other two individuals were determined not to have been involved with the initial theft and were released. This is a reminder not to drink and drive. Deputies were working a single vehicle accident on Highway 19 when a car driven by Octavius Ward, 37 years of age, entered the accident scene at a high rate of speed. Ward’s vehicle crashed into the rear of a patrol car causing a massive amount of damage to it. A total of five vehicles were involved and had to be towed from the site of the crash.

Ward was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and was subsequently arrested. We are thankful no serious injuries resulted from this incident.
