Many civic organizations are beginning to mail their absentee applications.

We have received many phone calls asking about the legitimacy of mail and whether it is from the Secretary of State. The SOS has *not yet* mailed absentee applications to registered voters.

We encourage you to look in the upper left corner to determine the source of the mailing, and remind you to look for the *official Election Mail flag* on mailings (pictured below). Items sent directly from the Board of Elections or SOS will display this official mail flag.

Many voters prefer to submit the SOS application. However, it will not make a difference if you choose to submit the 3rd party absentee application instead.

As a reminder, ballots will not be sent until after October 6, 2026.

All nominating petitions of candidates in nonpartisan races, local questions and issues (including local option petitions) must be filed with Boards of Elections by 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2026!

Please note: there are many third-parties sending mailers and registrations right now ahead of the 2026 Ohio gubernatorial election stating someone in your household may not be registered to vote. These are not generated by our office, or the Secretary of State’s office.

Do not panic! You have several options for action:
1.) Proactively check your registration status and details by visiting https://lookup.boe.ohio.gov/vtrapp/muskingum/vtrlookup.aspx
2.) Fill out the registration and mail it to OUR office (627 Market Street, Zanesville, OH 43701)
3.) Ignore the mailer (it's okay!)

You can check who mailed you this notice by looking at the upper left corner of the envelope you received. Many mailers have included return envelopes to send your registration to the Secretary of State. Even if the return envelope states this, it does not mean that this mailing generated from a Board of Elections office or the Secretary of State's office.

The volume of these types of mailers will likely increase ahead of a busy election season. You will not need to fill out every registration that you receive. You may also look into opt-out services.

Election Day means long hours, an early morning and late night, and nonstop dedication to serving our community. It is often a thankless job- but your hard work, patience, and commitment make our elections possible.

Because of you, voters were welcomed, processed carefully, and democracy worked exactly as it should.

We are truly grateful for each and every one of you. Thank you for your service to Muskingum County and for helping make every election a success!
