Today, we recognize and honor Juneteenth.

Observed each year on June 19, Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when news of emancipation reached the last remaining enslaved African Americans in Texas, marking an important moment in our nation's history.

As we reflect on the many stories that have shaped the United States, we acknowledge the significance of this day and the enduring values of freedom, resilience, and hope.

The Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area joins communities across the country in recognizing Juneteenth and honoring its place in our shared history.

Snake Day was a success at Week 3 of our Summer Camp!

Today, our campers slithered into learning all about snakes—the important role they play in our ecosystem, their unique anatomy, and why these often-misunderstood creatures deserve our respect. One of the highlights of the day was getting to meet a real live snake! One of our camp leaders brought in their pet snake, giving campers a unique opportunity to see these fascinating reptiles up close and learn more about them firsthand.

The fun continued with a lively game of Snake Bingo that had everyone excited and engaged!

We've had an incredible week of learning, exploring, and making memories, and we can't wait for another exciting week of camp next week.

🎉 There are only FOUR spots remaining! If you haven't registered your child yet, now is the time. Don't miss out on a summer filled with hands-on activities, history, nature, and fun!

We truly enjoyed hosting one of the City of Yuma's Summer Student Interns here at the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area!

During her time with us, she had the opportunity to meet our entire team, learn about the many roles that help our organization operate each day, and gain firsthand insight into the work we do to preserve and enhance Yuma's historic and natural treasures.

She also toured the Yuma Territorial Prison, Colorado River State Historic Park, and the Yuma East Wetlands, allowing her to experience the impact of our work beyond the office and see our mission in action.

Thank you for spending time with us—we loved sharing what we do and hope this experience provided valuable insight into the many career paths in parks, preservation, education, and community engagement!

At the Colorado River State Historic Park, history isn’t just something you read about—it’s something you can still connect to through the tools and trades that once kept life along the river running. One of those essential trades was blacksmithing.

In the early days of the Colorado River crossing and surrounding settlement, blacksmiths played a vital role in daily survival and industry. They forged and repaired tools, horseshoes, wagon parts, and equipment needed for river transport and frontier life. At a time when everything depended on durability and repair, the blacksmith’s shop was one of the most important working spaces in the area.

It’s a reminder that behind every journey up and down the Colorado River, there were skilled hands shaping the iron that made it possible.

While the forge may be quiet now, its story still echoes through the park—inviting guests to imagine the clang of hammer on anvil and the steady rhythm of a trade that quite literally held frontier life together.
