🌤️ YUMA COUNTY WEATHER & TRAVEL UPDATE
Tuesday, September 29 — This afternoon through tonight

For Yuma County residents: The National Weather Service outlook calls for a low chance of a brief shower or storm across southwest Arizona. No flooding or severe weather threats are expected locally in this outlook.

🚗 Traveling outside Yuma County? Heavy rain and flooding remain concerns elsewhere in Arizona. Flood Watches are in effect for portions of the state until 9 p.m.–midnight MST, depending on location.

📍 Tucson / Southeast Arizona: A slow-moving band of heavy rain will continue eastward through approximately 6–7 p.m. before moving into New Mexico. Rainfall rates of ½–1½ inches per hour could produce localized totals of 3–5 inches. Flash flooding is expected, and stronger storms may bring 40–55 mph wind gusts.

📍 Phoenix / South-Central Arizona: The main heavy-rain threat has largely ended, but isolated storms could bring additional downpours, mainly north and east of Phoenix. Existing flooding in rivers, creeks, and streams may continue for several hours.

📍 Northern Arizona: Slow-moving storms may produce localized additional rainfall of 1–2 inches, flash flooding near burn scars, and small hail. A brief landspout tornado is also possible in northwest Arizona during daylight hours. Showers and isolated storms may reach northeast Arizona late tonight into Wednesday morning.

⚠️ Before you travel:

• Check weather alerts and road conditions along your entire route.
• Never drive through flooded roads or washes. Turn Around, Don’t Drown!
• Obey road closures and barricades. Flooding can continue after rainfall stops.
• Slow down on wet roads and give first responders, public works crews, and utility workers plenty of room.

🚗 Traveling across Arizona today or Tuesday? Check conditions along your entire route.

The National Weather Service expects multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms through Tuesday evening. Flash flooding is the main concern, especially where storms repeatedly cross the same area.

📍 Areas to watch include:
• La Paz County, including Parker and Quartzsite: Tonight.
• Northern and central Arizona, including Flagstaff, Prescott, Payson, and the Phoenix area: Today through Tuesday, with flooding concerns continuing tonight.
• Tucson and southeastern Arizona: Today and Tuesday, with the flooding risk increasing Tuesday.

Rain and road conditions can change quickly between Yuma and your destination—even if it is dry when you leave.

Before traveling, check weather.gov for alerts along your route and AZ511.gov for highway closures. Allow extra time, slow down in rain, and never drive through water or around a barricade. If conditions become unsafe, stop somewhere safe or delay your trip.

Please give first responders, Public Works crews, and utility workers room to work, and follow their directions near closures.

Training in action today at Yuma County Emergency Management!

Today we’re hosting the AWR-362 Flooding Hazards: Science and Preparedness course, bringing together local emergency responders, public safety partners, public works, and other agencies to strengthen our community’s ability to prepare for and respond to flooding events.

Courses like this give our partners the opportunity to train together, share knowledge, and build stronger working relationships before an emergency occurs.

Thank you to the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center (NDPTC) and everyone attending today’s class!

🇺🇸 Remembering September 11 | Arizona Preparedness Month

Today, Yuma County Emergency Management joins communities across our nation in remembering the lives lost on September 11, 2001. We honor the courage of the first responders, service members, and everyday citizens who answered the call—and we recognize the lasting strength and unity demonstrated in the days that followed.

Governor Katie Hobbs has proclaimed September as Arizona Preparedness Month, in conjunction with National Preparedness Month. This observance encourages individuals, families, businesses, and communities across Arizona to prepare for emergencies and disasters.

Preparedness does not end when September is over. Emergencies can happen at any time, and taking small, consistent steps now can make a meaningful difference:

✅ Review and restock your emergency supply kit
✅ Update your family communication plan
✅ Know the hazards that could affect your community
✅ Sign up for local emergency alerts
✅ Include children, older adults, individuals with disabilities, and pets in your plans

Preparedness strengthens our homes, workplaces, and communities. This September, let us honor the lessons of the past by taking action today to help keep Yuma County safe, prepared, and resilient throughout the year.

We remember. We prepare. We stand together.

🏆 Yuma County Emergency Management is “Crushing It!”

Our team recently attended the 2026 Arizona Association of Emergency Managers Annual Conference in Scottsdale. This year’s conference brought emergency management professionals from across Arizona together to learn, exchange ideas and prepare for emerging risks and evolving threats.

We were honored to receive the “Show Offs: Crushing It!” recognition for:

✅ Increasing Great Arizona ShakeOut participation
✅ Maintaining an active Local Emergency Planning Committee
✅ Building a strong Community Emergency Response Team program

We’re proud of this recognition and grateful for the partnerships that help make our preparedness efforts possible. We look forward to bringing what we learned back to Yuma County as we continue working to keep our communities prepared, resilient and ready!

Resilient today. Ready tomorrow. Stronger together. 💪

⛈️ WEATHER SAFETY TIP: THUNDERSTORMS & BLOWING DUST

Thunderstorms in the desert can develop quickly and bring hazards beyond just rainfall. As storms move through the region today, gusty winds and blowing dust can rapidly reduce visibility, especially along roadways and across open desert areas.

Keep these safety tips in mind:

⚡ When thunder roars, go indoors! If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Seek shelter inside a substantial building or vehicle.

💨 Watch for blowing dust. Strong thunderstorm outflow winds can create areas of blowing dust with little warning, quickly reducing visibility.

🚗 If you encounter dense dust while driving: Avoid driving into it if possible. If visibility becomes dangerously low, pull completely off the roadway, stop, turn off your lights, set the parking brake, and keep your foot off the brake pedal.

🌧️ Never drive through flooded roadways. Heavy rainfall can cause normally dry washes and low-water crossings to flood quickly. Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

📱 Stay weather aware. Monitor changing conditions and have more than one way to receive weather alerts.

Conditions can change quickly during Arizona’s monsoon. Be prepared, slow down, and stay safe, Yuma County!
