During that time frame he oversaw 57 major ministries with a volunteer team of over 450. Some of those included a 100 man prayer team and a mission distributing 20,000 meals a month with six services and 650 people in attendance a week. Through SOLUM established in 2002 under the original name PrayerMetro, over 4000 pastors, business leaders, government leaders, and others receive encouragement and pray in unison across the world weekly. Two starting points can shape personal growth: reshape desire through Scripture, or understand identity and calling.

That's the central difference between Desiring God and Wild at Heart. Desiring God asks what your deepest desires are pointed toward. Wild at Heart asks who you are as a man and how your calling should take shape.

For growth planning, the distinction matters. If your choices feel out of step with your faith, Desiring God offers a starting point: examine where your joy lands, then use Scripture, repentance, prayer, and community to reorder desire. A steady practice, not a quick fix.

If you're unclear about purpose or how to live with courage, Wild at Heart starts with the heart and calling. It connects identity to action, and frames masculine strength as a way to serve others rather than dominate them. Honest relationships with other men are part of that growth.

Our view: choose the resource that addresses the question underneath your current challenge. "What should I want?" points toward Desiring God. "Who am I meant to be?" points toward Wild at Heart.

They approach personal growth from different directions, so the best first step depends on what needs attention now: the desires guiding your choices, or the identity and calling shaping your purpose.

Compare Desiring God and Wild at Heart for personal growth: their approach, target readers and where each one fits. Find the right starting point.

You finish a self-help chapter feeling motivated, then a few days later can self help books actually work starts to feel like a real question.

The gap is practice. A book can offer the map, but lasting change takes repeated action. What exercise from a book could you practice this week?

Can self help books actually work: Self-help books can create lasting change—but only with action.

The challenge of manhood in current culture is huge. Every day I read research and articles about violence by and against men, fear of men and fear by men, wacky manosphere, su***de and depression rates, the fatherless impact, marriage-less impacts, and more. Sometimes all that stress should lead to some simple action.

In prison last week as we graduated a group of men, one stayed behind and just stood there. "You make it so simple and in ways I can understand." He's been in and out of prison for seven years and closing in on returning to his hometown in the next few months. He did not want to leave. He did not want to complete the workshop but stay in it and learn more.

We make growth too complicated. We cover it with drugs and counseling and research and endless observations. Sometimes, we just need to get to the obvious and walk alongside other men.
