The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) unveils the big plans. It's only about eight minutes but gives a good overview. For Ypsilanti it includes connections East to Wayne County and Detroit and West to Ann Arbor. Particularly of importance to us is the commuter rail that will service Ypsilanti commuters both east and west and links into the City and Amtrak plans to stop the Wolverine train in Ypsilanti.

The Regional Transit Authority (RTA) proposal for commuter rail is the rest of the rail story for Ypsilanti. We have been advocating for a commuter train between Ann Arbor and Detroit with a stop in Ypsilanti for a number of years. The RTA plans to provide eight round trip runs. The City’s efforts to get the Wolverine Amtrak train to stop in Ypsilanti with the construction of a platform are all part of the process to get commuter rail in Ypsilanti. The rail platform in Ypsilanti will be able to accommodate both the Amtrak Wolverine trains and the proposed commuter trains. The plan and millage will have to be adopted in November 2016 for the RTA to move ahead. If adopted commuter rail is expected to begin by 2022.

REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY (RTA) UNVEILS AMBITIOUS PLAN
Last Thursday, the RTA presented their comprehensive plan that includes both Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and Commuter Rail along the Detroit-Ann Arbor corridor. Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor will be connected by a Bus Rapid Transit system that would provide a quicker system than exists now. A commuter rail system is also envisioned between Ann Arbor and Detroit with a stop in Ypsilanti. The commuter train will run eight (8) round trips a day – three in the morning, three in the evening, one mid-day and one late night. This will build on the City’s efforts to have the Amtrak Wolverine to stop in Ypsilanti and will share any platform or facilities. Of course, this is all contingent on a successful RTA millage election in November, 2016.

"HUGE" EXPANSION OF AAATA SERVICE COMING ON MAY 1. INFORMATIONAL WORKSHOPS SCHEDULED

ANN ARBOR, MI – On May 1, TheRide will be introducing the largest expansion of bus service in the greater Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti areas since 1979, as part of its Five-Year Transportation Improvement Program. The May, 2016 phase of fixed-route and paratransit improvements will be the third since voters approved the Plan in May, 2014. It will create more ways for citizens to connect with jobs, school, appointments, shopping, and family and friends in the urban core of Washtenaw County. Beginning March 23, TheRide will host community workshops throughout the area to help educate residents on the coming improvements and answer questions.

“The Ride’s May expansion moves the needle on many of our shared goals around access and opportunity,” said Brett Lenart, Interim Director of the Washtenaw County Office of Community and Economic Development. “Expanding the Ypsilanti service along with new Ann Arbor connector routes, and the expansion coming to Pittsfield and Scio Township strengthens the system as a whole; reducing travel time, and providing more frequent routes, longer service hours on nights and weekends – all that will directly and positively impact families in the County.”

The improvements beginning May 1 include more routes to serve more places, more direct routes in Ann Arbor & Ypsilanti, more frequent service, new route names and numbers, new service in Scio Township, new service in Pittsfield Township, and expanded A-Ride service for seniors and riders with disabilities. More information on the upcoming improvements can be found at TheRideYourWay.org.
