Fire Hydrant Inspection and Winterization

This time each year, YCUA winterizes the over 3000 hydrants in the system and checks their operation for fire protection. The procedure involves an employee completing an inspection of the internal workings of each fire hydrant, making repairs, and removing water from the hydrant barrels to prevent freezing. YCUA will also flush or run each fire hydrant to ensure that it will operate properly during an emergency. As part of this process, each fire hydrant is tagged with a ribbon to indicate the winterization has been completed. The color of the ribbon changes each year, this year green was selected.

Area residents should be advised that, as crews flush fire hydrants, there may be some discoloration of the water. If rust-colored water is experienced, simply run the cold water tap for a few minutes to let the water clear. The rust coloring is caused by a natural buildup of mineral content in the water system. The fire hydrant inspection program helps ensure that all our fire hydrants are ready in the event of an emergency. If you have any questions about the program, please contact YCUA Director of service operations Sean Knapp at 484-4600 ext. 325.

Headworks Odor Control Project

As part of the ongoing dedication to provide top quality, cost effective, and environmentally safe water and wastewater services to our customers, the Ypsilanti Community Utilities Authority (YCUA) will be making improvements to the headworks odor control system at the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) located on State Road west of McGregor Road in the Charter Township of Ypsilanti. The system removes nuisance odors from the preliminary and primary treatment processes of the WWTP, including the raw sewage influent receiving well, equalization tanks portion of the retention basin, and the septage receiving station. The foul odor is almost entirely attributable to hydrogen sulfide (‘rotten egg’ smell) generated while sewage is being transported to the WWTP as well as the first stages of the treatment process. The system was originally installed during the 1990s with incremental improvements during the early 2000s and consists of a two-stage wet chemical scrubber process. The combination of hydrogen sulfide and the two treatment chemicals, sodium hypochlorite and sodium hydroxide creates a highly corrosive environment which has resulted in much of the equipment in the system to be at or near the end of its useful life.

The improvements include replacement in kind of almost all existing system components, with some newitems being installed in different locations that are much less corrosive environments. The project will also include rehabilitation of deteriorated concrete surfaces in the raw sewage influent receiving well which have also been adversely impacted by exposure to hydrogen sulfide.
