Today, I stood for some of Louisiana’s most vulnerable citizens by bringing forward HCR 67 — the “Derek’s Promise Study.”
This resolution asks the Louisiana Department of Health to study the serious gaps in acute healthcare access for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Too many families are left without answers when their loved ones face medical crises, behavioral emergencies, or hospital discharges with nowhere appropriate to go. That has to change.
This is personal for me.
And I want families across Louisiana to hear this promise clearly:
I will continue fighting for a system that treats individuals with IDD with dignity, urgency, compassion, and proper medical care — not as an afterthought.
We must build a coordinated system of care that supports families, protects vulnerable individuals, and gives providers the tools they need to truly help people in crisis.
Every life has value. Every family deserves support. And every person with IDD deserves access to safe, appropriate healthcare.
This is more than policy.
This is a promise ❤️
