John F. Kennedy posed the question - ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country - but what if you could do for others while helping yourself?

That's what our Foster Grandparents and Senior Companion Programs are all about! Adults 55 and over can volunteer at a school, library, daycare, or other setting to volunteer with children and assisting teachers through our Foster Grandparent Program.

Prefer to spend time with adults? Our Senior Companion Program allows adults 55 and over to provide friendship to area senior citizens and joy into both the lives of our clients and volunteers!

Candy Siglow has been a dedicated member of Family and Community Services (FCS) for 16 years, with the last 9 years spent in her current program after FCS acquired Emerald Transportation, where she was originally employed.

Candy's favorite aspect of her job is the people she works with, whom she describes as awesome. While she doesn't see any major challenges in her role, she acknowledges that there are always some smaller ones to navigate.

One of the most gratifying parts of Candy's work is receiving daily thanks from those she helps, a sentiment that underscores the positive impact she has on others.

On a personal note, Candy has two daughters, three grandchildren, and two Harley Davidson motorcycles. She expresses gratitude for her job at FCS and the privilege of working with the AmeriCorps senior staff every day.

Candy's colleagues have high praise for her. They describe her as very helpful and patient, always willing to assist others and a wealth of knowledge and resources. She is considered the absolute backbone of what they do, helping to keep everyone organized and operations running smoothly. Candy's commitment to keeping everyone happy and her readiness to answer questions make her an invaluable team member.

As 2024 draws to a close, we want to spend time highlighting the generous donors who make our work possible.

Today, we thank the Thomases Family Foundation at the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation. They provided supplemental funding which contributed to Foster Grandparent volunteer supports and recognition, allowing our program to thrive. We are immensely thankful for their generosity and are thankful to be in partnership with them. The Thomases Family Foundation was created with the hope to better the world in which we all live. Their endowments seek to promote a spirit of “tzedakah”, which in Hebrew means righteousness or justice. In Judaism, tzedakah is a fundamental part of the way of life and is seen as a responsibility to help others and bring fairness to the world.

Thank you so much to Holly Bandy from Ohio Extension. She provided a QPR Training on su***de prevention to our Stark County Foster Grandparent volunteers. It was a great training that was very informative!

We are accepting volunteers from the Mahoning Valley, Geauga County, Greene County, Montgomery County, and Portage County. Earn non-reportable income while helping your community (some restrictions apply).
