🇺🇸 Honoring the Flag: A Tradition of Respect and Remembrance
On September 12, 2026, Veterans' Outreach Caseworker and U.S. Army Airborne veteran Chris Derr attended a Flag Retirement Ceremony at Trumbull Moose Family Center 186 in Warren, Ohio. The lodge is located at 674 Main St. SW and has been part of the Warren community since 1909.
The ceremony provided an opportunity for members of the community to gather and properly retire American flags that were no longer fit for display. The flags were placed into a ceremonial fire, giving each one a final farewell with dignity and respect.
The videos from the evening capture the powerful atmosphere of the ceremony, from the flames and smoke of the retirement fire to community members gathered nearby to witness and participate in this patriotic tradition.
For veterans like Chris, the meaning behind the ceremony runs especially deep. The American flag represents the country he served, the freedoms he helped defend, and the fellow service members whose sacrifices are forever woven into the story of our nation.
Chris's participation also reflects his continued commitment to service. As a Veterans' Outreach Caseworker, he works every day to support veterans in our community. Outside of his work, he continues to take part in events that honor veterans, military traditions, and the symbols that hold special meaning for those who have worn the uniform.
A worn American flag has served its purpose. Retiring it properly is not an act of disrespect; it is an act of honor.
