Happy heavenly birthday to civil rights leader Minister Malik el-Shabazz. Commonly referred to as Malcolm X, Minister Shabazz was born May 19, 1925. He began studying Islam while incarcerated in the late 1940s. Upon his release, he immediately became active in the Nation of Islam (NOI) and rose to become the most prominent minister in the country. Malcolm had a spiritual awakening when he made the Pilgrimage to Mecca in 1964. He worshipped, lived, and ate with white muslims and discovered that the teachings of the NOI were wrong in regards to the white community as a whole. He spent the last year of his life more engaged in the civil rights movement and distanced himself from the teachings of NOI on race. That separation led to his public assassination at the Audubon Ballroom in New York on Feb. 21, 1965. Minister Shabazz was survived by his then pregnant wife, Dr. Betty Shabazz and their 4 daughters who were present when he was murdered. Like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, Minister Shabazz died at 39 years of age. Rest in power Brother Minister. Thank you for a legacy of service. β€οΈπŸ–€πŸ’š
