A somber tradition continued Thursday as local law enforcement gathered for the Annual Fallen Officers Memorial at St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Youngstown. The yearly event began with a procession of cruisers from different departments, led by the Youngstown Police Motorcycle unit as well as the “Blue Knights” organization. Hundreds of officers, deputies, family members and friends paid tribute to the 29 Mahoning Valley officers to die in the line of duty since 1891. Among the speakers was David Toepfer, US Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, as well as Sheriff’s Lt. TJ Assion, who also serves as the Ohio Vice President of the Fraternal Order of Police. The ceremony features a reading of the names of officers being remembered, each with a red rose attached to a special memorial wreath. The somber program concluded with a 21-gun salute from the Youngstown Police Honor Guard and the playing of “Taps.” The event is hosted each May by both F.O.P. Lodge #28, representing Youngstown Police and F.O.P. Lodge #141, representing the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office.

37-year-old Chad Scofinsky was sentenced to six to nine years in prison following a guilty plea to one count of R**e. Scofinsky will need to register as a tier III s*x offender following the completion of his sentence.

The victim agreed to the resolution and declined to proceed to trial due to the sensitive nature of the offenses and the trauma associated with testifying.
