BRMEMC - Blue Ridge Mountain Electric Membership Corporation Members Serving Members with affordable, reliable electric and broadband services. Many new products and services are offered to our member-owners.

Founded in 1937 by a group of businessmen, BRMEMC was established and continues to operate as a not-for-profit, member-owned, Rural Electric Cooperative. The founders elected a Board of Directors and made it their goal to bring electricity to this mountain area. In June 1938, the EMC was incorporated and an agreement was executed naming The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) as the supplier of elect

ricity. Agreements were made with the Rural Electrification Administration to borrow money for construction and the work began. From that humble beginning BRMEMC now serves over 46,000 customers, over 53,000 meters and will continue to grow with the community.

Blue Ridge Mountain EMC Unveils New "BRMEMC Fiber” Brand and Logo

Young Harris, Ga. (5/11/26) – Blue Ridge Mountain EMC officially unveiled the new brand and logo for its fiber subsidiary, now operating as BRMEMC Fiber, during a community logo reveal event held Monday at the cooperative headquarters. The new branding reflects the cooperative’s continued investment in expanding high-speed fiber internet service across Northeast Georgia and Western North Carolina while reinforcing its connection to the communities it serves.

“We wanted a name that our members already recognized and connected with,” said Alex King during the unveiling ceremony. “When we looked at how our members talked about our internet service online and in the community, the answer was already there. The people know our internet service as BRMEMC Fiber.”

The new logo incorporates several elements that reflect the cooperative’s mission and heritage. The blue color palette represents trust and reliability, while the mountain imagery honors the region and the terrain across which the fiber network is being built. A lightning bolt integrated into the design pays tribute to the cooperative’s electric roots and longstanding commitment to serving the community.

The event highlighted the rapid growth of the cooperative’s fiber operations. BRMEMC Fiber recently surpassed 21,000 subscribers, representing approximately one-third of the cooperative’s total meter count. The network is currently about two-thirds complete, with plans to finish the remaining buildout within the next seven years.

The cooperative also announced that it has been preliminarily selected for federal Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) funding projects in both Union and Towns counties. If finalized, those projects would help bring fiber coverage in the two counties up to approximately 95 percent within the next three years.

In addition to network expansion, BRMEMC Fiber continues to introduce new services for residential and business members, including:

• Multi-gigabit internet speeds up to 8 Gig
• Managed Wi-Fi solutions with enhanced in-home troubleshooting capabilities
• SmartBiz business services offering additional cybersecurity and marketing tools
• Outdoor Wi-Fi solutions designed to extend connectivity beyond the home

“We’re constantly exploring new ways to add value for our members,” King said. “At the end of the day, we’re here to support our community.”

The event concluded with attendees receiving commemorative hats featuring the new BRMEMC Fiber logo and participating in a group photo to celebrate the launch of the new brand identity.

Happy First Day of Spring. It’s brought some incredible weather with it over the next several days. It will be a great time to do some low maintenance energy-saving updates around your home such as: replacing old & worn weatherstripping around doors and windows. Cleaning out those dryer vents and getting those gutters and downspouts cleaned out. It’s also important to trim back overgrown shrubs and vegetation around your home.

BRMEMC crews are diligently working to restore service to just over 1,500 members from across our entire service territory as a result of the line of storms moving through during the early morning hours of March 16. The largest of these outages is currently affecting over 900 members is in the Fodder Creek area of Towns County caused by a broken three-phase pole. In all, our area was certainly spared the worst of these storms, but we are working hard to restore service to every member. Please be patient as our crews work in less-than-optimal conditions to restore service.

LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS SELECTED FOR 2026 WASHINGTON YOUTH TOUR
(Young Harris, GA — March 12, 2026) — Three local students, Ella Akins, a student at Union County High School; Katelyn Walls, a student at Towns County High School; and Robert Manning, a Hayesville High School Student, have been selected to represent Blue Ridge Mountain EMC on the 2026 Washington Youth Tour, an all-expenses-paid leadership and civic engagement experience sponsored by Georgia’s electric membership corporations (EMCs).

Since 1965, the Washington Youth Tour has provided promising high school leaders with an up-close look at the nation’s government, history and public service while fostering connections with students from across Georgia and the United States.

The 2026 tour, scheduled for mid-June, will include approximately 115 student delegates from Georgia. Participants will gather in Atlanta before traveling to Washington, D.C., where they will explore the federal government firsthand. While in the nation’s capital, delegates will meet with elected officials to discuss issues important to their local communities and visit historic sites such as the U.S. Capitol, Smithsonian museums, the U.S. Supreme Court, and Arlington National Cemetery.

In addition to learning about U.S. government and history, students will participate in leadership development and team-building activities designed to help them build confidence, communication skills and a deeper understanding of their own leadership potential.

Each of the student delegates was selected through a competitive application process at their school. BRMEMC is excited to sponsor these students in this very special opportunity and is eager to watch each of them absorb the benefits from this trip. BRMEMC has once again been closely monitoring the National Weather Service forecasts for the region in an effort to determine the potential for snow this weekend. Current models predict that our region will, in fact, receive at least 1" of snow, with most predictions leaning toward 2"-5" for our local area. While we all share at least some skepticism about weather forecasts these days, BRMEMC is preparing for snowfall in our mountains, and will be closely monitoring today's forecasts for any changes. Most troubling in the forecast is the expectation of single digit temperatures on Sunday morning, as well as a prolonged period below freezing across our service area.

BRMEMC wants to remind all members that now is the time to act. If you have not made preparations for this winter weather, please do so immediately. This includes making provisions for backup food and water, acquiring emergency heating sources, and making alternative plans for medically fragile individuals. It is also a good time to check on elderly neighbors. At the end of the day, it's our members...our people...that matter the most, and we want to ensure that everyone is safe and sound throughout this weekend's winter weather event.
