🌱 Putting your garden to bed for the season? Don’t leave your soil bare all winter!

If you have a vegetable garden, raised beds, or other bare garden space, a fall cover crop can help protect and improve your soil while your garden is resting.

We still have cover crop seed available at the Kendall County Soil & Water Conservation District!

🌾 Pea & Oat Mix — $5/lb
A great beginner-friendly option for the home garden! Peas and oats establish a protective cover over your soil, helping suppress w**ds, protect against erosion, add organic matter, and cycle nutrients through the soil. Best of all, peas and oats are typically winter-killed in our area, so they naturally die back during the winter and don't require spring termination.

☘️ Red Clover — $9/lb
Looking for a living cover for a garden path, between garden rows, or an area you want to keep covered? Red clover can provide a low-growing, mowable cover while helping build soil fertility. Unlike Pea & Oat, red clover can survive the winter, so it will continue growing into the spring and will need to be managed.

🌱 Why use a cover crop?
• Protect bare soil over the winter
• Help suppress w**ds
• Add organic matter to your soil
• Support healthier soil structure
• Help retain and cycle nutrients
• Keep living roots in the soil after your vegetables are finished

They can be a great tool for home vegetable gardens and raised beds.

📍 Stop by the Kendall County Soil & Water Conservation District to pick up your seed while supplies last!
