The Yorkville Police Department is proud to recognize the successful completion of our 2026 Summer Internship Program by Nick, a senior at Utica University majoring in Criminal Justice.

During his time with YPD, Nick gained valuable hands-on experience and insight into the daily operations of a police department while earning college credit toward his degree. His internship included patrol ride-alongs, assisting officers with station duties, observing Village Court proceedings, spending time with the School Resource Officer at Whitesboro Middle School, and learning about report writing, traffic stops, and other aspects of law enforcement operations.

Nick also had the opportunity to observe officers responding to a variety of calls for service, including domestic disputes, larcenies in progress, unattended deaths, and even assisting with the safe recovery of several puppies that had gotten loose and were in danger of being struck by vehicles.

In addition to field experience, Nick contributed to several department projects assigned by Chief Allen, including assisting with survey development, documenting confiscated license plates, and helping improve the department’s social media presence.

Throughout the summer, Nick demonstrated professionalism, curiosity, and a strong willingness to learn. We are proud to have played a role in his educational and professional development, and we wish him continued success as he completes his studies and pursues a future career in criminal justice.

Congratulations, Nick, and thank you for being part of the Yorkville Police Department!

In an effort to increase motorist safety, the Village of Yorkville Police Department will participate in the Buckle Up New York, Click It or Ticket campaign.

This statewide initiative is sponsored by the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and is designed to promote the safety of all motorists and passengers.

All drivers and front-seat passengers are required by law to wear seat belts. New York State law also requires rear-seat passengers to wear seat belts or be properly secured in an approved child safety seat.

The Village of Yorkville Police Department will conduct enhanced enforcement patrols from May 18, 2026 through May 31, 2026 to help ensure compliance and promote safe travel for everyone on the road.

“Statistics show that seat belts save lives.”

You can learn more about seat belt safety on the DMV’s website or the GTSC’s website.

Yesterday, Yorkville Police Officer Catherine Visalli, Whitesboro School Resource Officer, joined SADD Club Advisor Ms. Rainbow and members of the SADD Club at the High School for a Safe Driving Day leading up to junior prom.

The event focused on helping students make safe, responsible choices during prom, ball, and graduation season. Students learned about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, distracted driving, and common facts versus fiction related to impaired driving laws and consequences.

As part of the presentation, students had the opportunity to try impaired goggles, which helped demonstrate how difficult it can be to walk safely, let alone drive, when vision and judgment are impaired. This hands-on activity provided an important perspective on the real dangers of impaired driving.

Upperclassmen also signed a SADD safe driving pledge, reinforcing their commitment to making smart decisions and looking out for one another.

The Yorkville Police Department thanks Ms. Rainbow, the SADD Club members, the students, and the Village of Yorkville for their participation and continued commitment to safety. We encourage all students to enjoy prom, ball, and graduation season responsibly. Always make a plan, drive sober, avoid distractions, and help keep each other safe.

Last month, during the week of April 27 through May 1, the Yorkville Police Department sent three officers to attend Crisis Intervention Training at Mohawk Valley Community College’s Rome Campus.

The Village of Yorkville Police Department joined members of the Rome Police Department, Utica Police Department, and additional law enforcement agencies for this important training, which was led by the Oneida County Department of Health.

The training consisted of an intensive 5-day, 40-hour Crisis Intervention Training program designed to enhance law enforcement response to individuals experiencing mental health crises.

CIT helps officers develop the skills needed to reduce the risk of serious injury or death during these encounters, while also connecting individuals with appropriate treatment, support, and recovery resources whenever possible.

Key topics covered during the training included effective communication strategies, recognizing signs of emotional distress, understanding mental illness and recovery, trauma, PTSD, developmental disabilities, autism awareness, dementia, and local mental health resources.

We extend our appreciation to the instructors and community agencies that contributed to the training by sharing their knowledge and insight.

The Village of Yorkville Police Department is proud to have had participated in this important training. This represents another step forward in ensuring our officers are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to respond effectively and compassionately to mental health crises in our community.
