Students are back in school, one of the most important traffic laws to remember is also one of the most misunderstood.
In Indiana, drivers must stop for a school bus whenever its red lights are flashing and the STOP arm is extended—even if you're traveling in the opposite direction. The only exception is when the roadways are separated by a true physical barrier, such as a grassy median, concrete barrier, or other divider designed to prevent crossing.
For Yorktown drivers, that means this is simple to remember:
• SR 32 between Andrews Road and Nebo Road is the only location in the Yorktown Community School District where opposing traffic is separated by a physical barrier.�• Everywhere else in town, traffic in both directions must stop for a stopped school bus.
A few extra seconds of patience helps protect students as they board and leave the bus. Before continuing through any bus stop, make sure the red lights have stopped flashing, the STOP arm has been retracted, and the bus has begun moving.
